Intolerance to Breast Milk - Is This Possible?

by Cheryl23, Nov 01, 2006 12:00AM
As most of you know, I am bottle feeding my newborn daughter and pumping as well. I am pumping milk and we've been mixing it with the formula.

My question is...when we give her the breast milk, she seems to spit up what seems like everything she ate! When she has the formula only, she's just fine. It's not possible to have an intolerance to breast milk, is it??? I've never heard of this, but it happens 100% of the time...any feedback would be helpful! Thanks!

Intolerance to breastmilk is rare but possible.  My son couldn't tolerate breast milk.

Check with your pediatrician.  It could also be intolerance to something YOU eat, that gets into the breast milk.  Good luck!

its something your eating ie dairy products ect you need to ask your doctor about what you eat and what he thinks you should eat/avoid also it could be that the formula is thicker the possibility of your daughter being intolerant to your milk is next to none it happens but very very rarely.

I agree with what the previous posters said...I bet it's something you're eating.  There is an "elimination diet" you can try.  I'm not sure on the details but I bet you could search and find lots of info.  It's worth a shot, even as an experiment!  Good luck!

It may be that the formula is thicker, too, and just stays down easier (gross, but, it's easier to 'throw-up' water than a thick soup or something.) It is rare to be intolerant of breast milk- remember all the formulas actually try to get as 'close to breast milk' as possible. Lactose, for ex., is your baby's main energy source. Formulas use lactose too, or substitute other sugars for it (corn syrup, for ex.). I told another poster to check out a website by Dr. Sears. I learned a lot after falling for every formula, bottle, gadget for colic/severe gas. Also, my dr. and lactation consultant said besides caffeine, changing my diet would make no difference (I'm a vegetarian) b/c the gas is being produced in her intestine during her digestion, not from what I ate and digested. Different theories on that though, like everything! My daughter simply got better w/digestive issues w/ age...

Has anyone used Colic Calm?

http://www.coliccalm.com/

I am trying this as a last hope to calm my screaming little baby.  It has charcoal in it?  That is the only difference I can see between it and the current Gripe water I am using.  I switched formulas to Enfamil Gentlease.  It has been 2 days and I see no change in my daughter's tummy.  She is just FULL of gas and still won't poop on her own.

My daughter was fussy and woke up several times, gassy, at night as infant when I ate any dairy products at all. I experimented with it and absolutely, she could not tolerate my milk when I ate dairy. I avoided it for about a year.  She can now drink milk (9 yo) but still gets gassy and bloated; so we still try to use rice or almond milk.  There are babies that are spitter-upper. Perhaps the position s/he's in while eating? Maybe prop up a bit more while breastfeeding?

Hi. I posted to your comment yesterday and told you that my DD has similar problems and that we eliminated them by switching to nutrimagen formula. I also tried gripe water from Earth Fare and I ordered Colic Calm. Honestly, I was really disappointed with both of them. The Colic Calm that I ordered was not only exensive but the charcoal stained her clothing as well as anything else it touched. In addition when she pooped it was all excreted and made a huge mess, and it did not help much with the crying. Gentlease stil l has lactose and cows milk protein in it. I really would try the nutramigen for at least a week and  nothing else. It worked for us when the gentlease and gripe waters did  not. Also you need to eliminate the breast milk while you are trying this b/c you may be getting dairy, etc that is upseting her tummy.

when I consumed cheese pie, I found out what real colic means! horrible! I am vegetarian, and vegan now - avoiding all diary. My son (4.5month old now)  had no such serious colics after diary elimination. I also noticed that if I don't get him up and give him time to burp properly after every feed, he has discomfort similar to colics, but much lighter.
