dizzy from anti-thyroid meds

by DMB2801, Apr 16, 2007 12:00AM
I began Tapazole after I was diagnosed with Graves. Three weeks after taking it I started having lightheadedness. Called Dr. switched to PTU dizziness continued on ptu for 3 1/2 weeks also developed headaches. Went to GP was told its allergies, did not feel better. Developed pain in ears. Went to ENT Dr. was told hearing and ears are fine it is probably thyroid meds. Went to see Endro Thyroid levels are normal, great. Now I am back to Tapazole.(2nd day back) I feel horrible dizziness, burning headache neck and back pain. I feel horrible not myself. Felt great up until that 3 week point with Tapazole. Any imput would help I do not know what to do. I do not want to have RAI because medicine is doing its job, I just feel awful.

Hi DMB2801, You are right!  You don't want to take RAI because medicine will definitely do its job!  I was diagnosed with Graves Disease as well.  Endo prescribed tapazole as follows:  5 mg tablets four times a day = 20 mgs a day.  I started taking this dose and I got similar symptoms such as earaches, lightheadedness, headaches, pain in neck and back.  I stopped tapazole for couple of days.  Then I split the tablets and took one 2.5 mg half tablet in the morning and one 2.5 mg half tablet at night (total dose for day 5 mg).  I did this for three days.  After that, I took three 2.5 mg tablets per day for three days (total dose for day 7.5 mg).  Then I took four 2.5 mg tablets per day for three days (total dose for day 10 mg).  I was increasing the dose by 2.5 mg every three to five days.  This allowed my body to slowly accept the tapazole without side effects.  When I cut the tablets and started having them, I noticed I had trouble breathing with a burning feeling in my chest, so I put the half tablets in capsules.  You said you were getting some allergies but didn't mention if you were having trouble breathing.  If your breathing bothers you, you can make some chammomile tea and rub it on your chest with a cotton ball.  Your breathing will calm down right away.  Good luck!  Tapazole is the way to go - RAI!

Hi DMB2801, One more thing I wanted to mention is that taking Tapazole on an empty stomach will intensify any side effects.  You might want to keep that in mind as well...

I am 40 yrs old and have been taking synthroid since I was 12 yrs old. Never really had many symptoms or just did not associate them with it.  But the last 3 weeks I have been dizzy, lightheaded.  I also have high blood pressure.  In Jan he increased my bp meds. Last summer they increased my synthroid meds.  Because I have been feeling so bad, I went to the doctor.  He said I had allergies.  Gave me meds and they have not helped the dizzy feeling. Went to an Ears, Nose and Throat doctor. He said I did not have allergies, did not have fluid behind my ear. Thought I should get MRI for MS. Scared me to death. Anyway,   I had THS test done last week. They called and said my levels were high.  They were going to lower my dosage.  Can that cause dizzy feeling???  Can a slight change cause that?  I am so tired of being dizzy and not being able to function normal.  I guess I should ask what my levels are..huh?  Been doing so long that I never ask anymore.  Any  info would be great!!

Been taking Tapazole since 4 weeks and then symptoms like itching, headaches, pains in my joints occurred.  I've been off Tapazole for 5 days now because my headaches are just excruciating.  My doctor didn't even know that Tapazole could cause these.  I had my impacted tooth removed, eyes checked just to get rid of the headaches and nothing worked.  Only researching online revealed that it really was what we had suspected all along.  I have arthritic pains and painful teeth (like brain freeze except I'm not eating anything cold).  Has anyone any advice for me from this point on?
