induction using prostaglandin after c section

by fuzzywoo, Nov 12, 2006 12:00AM
Looking for some advice from anyone who has been in simular situation or knows of someone who has.

I am 41 weeks pregnant on Saturday, I had a c section with my first daughter in October 2003 (she was breech), and was hoping for a vaginal delivery this time around.  My partner walked out on us when I was 7 weeks pregnant so its just me and my daughter at home and I feel a vaginal delivery would be easier to recover from.

My dilema - my cervix is only just starting to soften, I am booked in on Friday to discuss induction.  Should I go for prostaglandin induction if my cervix is still shut.  I know there is an increased risk in uterine rupture (about 2.5%)

Have any of you been told your cervix is soft and closed and that suddenly changed?

Have any of you had a vaginal birth after previous section using  the induction drug prosaglandins or know anyone who has?

Have any of you known anyone who has experianced a uterine rupture and what the out come was (I do realise this is an emergancy).

Any input greatly received - maybe just maybe my baby will decide they have had enough and decide to be born! - I hope so.

thank you to all who input

Many doctors will not consider using prostaglandins to induce someone with a prior uterine scar.  Indeed, it's even against the current ACOG guidelines. Some will, but will only use a weak prostaglandin gel.  Many times, that doesn't work as well as the stronger agents.

Your doctor may be talking about simply using pitocin to induce you.  You'll know more after your appt.  Best of luck to you.

My hospital wont induce after a c section as it can increase your risk of rupture from 5 to 25% so hopefully you go into labour naturally. I've had one c section and will have another in a couple of days as they wont induce it has been 3 years since your last c section so it could be ok I guess your dr will know best its only been 20 months since my last c section I would love to have a VBAC but its not an option for me. I dont know anyone who has had a uterine rupture but know its not that good if it happens its very rare if you go into labour naturally after c section. Good luck.

I really can't answer many of your questions but I thought my story might help.  I had a c-section w/ my first b/c she was breech.  I had a scheduled c-section w/ my second and when the doctor got in there he said that it was a good thing that I didn't go into labor b/c my uterus was "paper thin" and probably would have ruptured.  I know that many people do have successful vaginal births after a c-section, but my 2nd c-section was not nearly as difficult to recover from.  I was up and moving around easily within 3 days.  I know this is not typical for everyone, but just something to think about.  Good luck with whatever choice you make (or that your baby makes ;)
