Formula failed us again

by decogrl, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
I had posted several times regarding my baby girl who is 8 weeks old.  We switched her to Infamil Gentilease formula which we thought seemed to be working however, my baby is back to square 1.  She has gas all day long and cannot poop on her own.  She has runny bms but for whatever reason will not poop.  She also has severe tummy aches after she has the hiccups ---which is like 6 times a day.  Will I ever have a happy infant?  I tried Colic Calm and that did not work.  We mixed in Caro syrup and it only gives her more of a tummy ache.  Is there a forumla out there for her?  HELP!

Hi.  Not a mommy yet but my Best friend was having the same problem you are.  First she switched to a soy based formula but, she still had problem. She tried the kayro syrup and that didnt seem to work either.  finally the Dr. suggested to give her two Oz of prune juice once or twice a day (I think she was told to add water but I'm not 100% sure) anyhow, I think you should definetly talk to your Dr. and ask them if this might be a good option for your baby.

We tried adding much less prune juice than that and she was in miserable pain.  SHe just has a lot of gas all of the time and I don't want to further add to her tummy troubles.  The one time we tried prune juice she pooped like 9 times in one night and was so miserable.

my daughter had the same trouble.  I boiled fennel and made a tea and mixed this with water and gave it to her warm.  i dont know if a dr would approve of it but it worked for my daughter.  always check w/ your dr.  i just needed to try anything.  good luck

Okay let me ask, how do you know she is in pain. My daughter (13 weeks old) would cry and cry and she was only going to the bathroom once a day and sometimes not even that much. And she to would cry and cry. So we brought her to the hospital and my doctor that a barimam enama (not sure on the spelling) would be a great idea. She said it would show us any problems with her bowels and all the plumbing down there and it would let her pass anything that might be "stuck". Well the end result was she was fine. Nothing was blocked and she was not consitpated. The doctor said a lot of babies only have a BM 2 times a week. I will a sure it the crying will stop. I have one son (adopted) and my DD. So she was my first baby. Do you want to know what finally help? Letting her sleep more. Until she was 10 weeks old she really was sleeping about 20 hours a day! When I let her sleep more, the crying stopped. No if she doesnt take at least 2 naps that are a few hours long during the day than by 6pm she screams until bed time!~!!!!! (which causes her to suck in air which causes gas. It might just be my daughter, but more sleep no crying. It will sometimes take an hour of fussing with her to get her to sleep but once we do she is a diffrent child.

It sound like you should ask your doctor about neocate.  I beleive you can only get it by prescription. That is the way it was 5yrs ago.  It is already brokendown so it is very easy on the tummy and good for reflux. I do believe it is exspenive, but you can get it on wic and some insurances will cover it.

Good luck.

Try using Gripe Water.  It works wonders on gassy babies and it can help with hiccups sometimes too.  It ususually can only be found at a natural health food store (not GNC!).  Sometimes its in Indian grocery stores too if you have any near you.  It's all natural and it really does work!

I can't remember if I already replied to you, so sorry if I already told you. My son couldn't poop on his own for 2 months after he came home from the NICU. I gave him the glycerin suppositories every 5 days and even then it would last longer then an hour before he pooped all over the place (just once, but it was like a softicecreammachine, yuckie!) Then we lowered his calories (I know that isn't an option for you), I gave him a bit of water (1-2 ounce a day) on drs. orders but I didn't think that helped AND we upped his reglan. Reglan is meant to make everything "run smoother". I know it is a medicine they don't like to give babies because it can lead to seizures, but he got it for his reflux (in addition to his zantac). I got the same medication myself after my horrible delivery/hysterectomy when I always had cramping when eating (they took out the small intestines to make more room to work and then put them back in so it took a month or so until everything settled again) so maybe you could check with your dr. My son now poops by himself, but it just looks as if he only needs to every 3-4 days. Soon we'll wean him of the Reglan and then we'll have to resort to prunejuice as well and when we start on solids mext week the dr. advised rice cereal for only a couple days to a week and then switching to oatmeal to not make things worse. I know you're not there yet, but I just wanted to tell you. Sorry I don't know about formula's...

Hey I'm in a hurry so I didn't read everyones posts to u, but my DH had a cousin that had to drink goats milk, it was the only kind she could tolerate (I'm not sure how they went about figuring this out but the goat milk worked) Good Luck

I sooo feel for you. Only time helped us just as my DR. said- " Things should get better after 12, maybe even 16 weeks". I tried everything under the sun and spent so much $. I bought every formula to supplement, all types of gripe water, Colicalm, herbal wraps for their belly, the Amby bed, even special bottles that 'reduce gas'. Nothing. I finally went back to supplementing w/Enfamil Lipil milk-based at around 12 weeks and sure enuf she does seem to be doing better. Mostly the gas problem in the morning, instead of all day. Just hang in there. And I personally would leave the whole poop thing alone. She doesn't have to go everyday to be normal!

I can tell she is in pain because right before she passes gas she cries and cries.

We tried gripe water, Mycolin drops, Little Tummies, etc.  Nothing works.

This may sound silly, but have you tried Hyland Colic tablets? I have never dealt with these specific issues, I always nursed exclusively and if my guys got gas, I just looked at my diet and changed things a little. But when my second baby had some issues with gas due to a few "oops" in my diet (hey, sometimes a milkshake or a bowl of chili hits the spot) we tried the tablets and they worked great. I also recommend them the Hyland Teething tablets when the time comes, they are a lifesaver ; )

Hi. I have responded to your posts several times. We were in the same boat with our DD who is now nine weeks. We switched her to nutramigen(hypoallergenic) formula. It is pricey but you don't need a presciption at it had worked absoltely wonderfully! You really should try it!

by mandymoo1983, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM

I remember when my daughter was colicky and the only thing that worked was a good car ride. Pretty pricey these days BUT when you are desperate you will do anything!

Just a thought, but if she's having runny bm's, but nothing with firmness, maybe ask the doc for an u/s. I've nursed my 3 so I don't know what formula fed babies bm's should look like at this age. I know of someone who's one year old was only having diarrhea (was vomiting too though) & she MADE her pedi do an x-ray & the poor thing was just blocked with poop! They can't always tell by just feeling on the abdomen. It's worth a shot. Good luck to you. It will get better for the both of you! :)
