MSPI (milk soy protein intolerance)??? kellym/decogrl

by Me2mommy2b, Nov 18, 2006 12:00AM
Hello, again. I wanted to know if you've ever heard of milk soy protein intolerance of if any of your babies suffered from it?  Someone suggested that my baby might have that and there is a very strict diet I have to follow (basically read all the labels and be very careful with products that might have milk or soy products in it).

Kellym/decogrl-how are your babies doing?  Did you try anything new?

Decogrl-I read that Hyland Tablets have milk product in it so I don't think I'll be trying it unless I see that my baby is not MSP intolerant.

I remembered another question that I had (sorry, sleepless nights cause the ADD).  I noticed that my baby's been producing more saliva in the last 2-3 days as if she's teething.  She's only 8 weeks old.  Is it possible that she might be teething?

The drool factory begins production a few months before you see any teeth pop through. Keep a few bibs handy to protect the clothes and a few burp rags to wipe the face.

And as far as the Hyland Tablets, they do contain a lactase base but it is such a tiny amount that it really shouldn't cause a problem. If you ever get a chance to look at a tablet you will see just how tiny they are.

My uncle who is a gastroenterologist is putting her on Zantac to see if there is a difference.  My pediatrician wants me to wait until her 2 month appointment on Tuesday before switching her forumla.  Hubby and I are alone for the night as my aunt and uncle are watching Ameera to give us particularly me a break so I get more than 1-2 hours of sleep.  I feel so terrible missing her bad!  But I did get a much needed nap today.  I guess I have to do this more often so that I get my sanity back LOL!

My DD's pediatrician told us at her 2 month visit that a baby's digestive enzymes increase around that time and that is why there is more drool.  I also think it has to do with the very beginnings of teething as well...but it's definitely the digestive enzymes.

I hope you are able to find information about MSPI.  It can be very overwhelming to determine...especially if you're breastfeeding.  Good luck!

Decogrl - Good luck with zantac.  It wasn't successful for us, but it might provide enough relief for your DD to make her happy again!  AND get you some more sleep.  :)

My son was actually "allergic" to all dairy and soy from infancy on.  We avoided both from 14 mos. to about 8 years old. It is hard to do but worth it. He can now eat stuff with both (although not a lot of it), no longer has any eczema and only very rarely asthma.BTW, we were diagnosed only through a blood test called a "RAST" test (otherwise they're just guessing).

Lactose is one of the milk sugars not a milk protein (allergies are always to proteins, in this case casein or whey). You can be INTOLERANT to lactose if you don't have enough of enzyme lactase to break it down (but not officially "allergic" which involves hist reactions to proteins).  You really have to make a call on some of these products and how much or little you can tolerate---I was fanatical about not choosing anything that was dairy-derived or soy-derived (and actually, grains, eggs, nuts and peanuts were also on our list but much more anaphylactically, ie fatal way). We cooked mostly fresh food honestly including our own gluten free bread with no dairy, eggs or grains.

Since most formula is milk or soy based you're kind of out of luck if you're on formula. We did have one thing NEOCATE (amino acid formula, still with soy and corn and food coloring) but mostly it was lucky we were nursing. Most of the formulas that pretend to be hypoallergenic are not. See http://infantrefluxdisease.com/hypoallergenic_baby_formula.htm for more on ingredients lists.

Hi, How's everything going? Well, things are looking up around here. Lily slept the other night for 7 hours and the night after that for 5.  I think she's been easier at night than the past few days also. I am still soley breastfeeding still. I have her laying on my lap right now hoping she'll wake up because she's been sleeping on and off since 6:30, (it's 10:00) If I feed her one last time I'm hoping she'll sleep through the night (fat chance) One thing I wanted to ask you. Lily has had a cold and cranky so I have let her sleep in the swing. SHE HATES HER BED. She can be dead asleep and you lay her in the bed and she is bright eyed and pissed!! Have I lost my window of opportunity to get her used to her bed? Is your baby sleeping in the bed? HELP!
