Goiter, tingling in face and hands

by bethmomof2, May 10, 2007 12:00AM
Does anyone know if a goiter can cause a sort of sensory neuropathy?  I've had tingling in my face and hands on and off for a few years.  All neurological tests, including brain MRIs, have always been fine.  Recently I had surgery to remove a large goiter on the right side of the thyroid; (3.5cm)three large nodules that were "sandwiching" a nerve and growing towards my collarbone area.  I now have 80% of the left lobe remaining.  My thyroid levels are normal, although they may change now since surgery.  It seems the tingling problems are a little worse since surgery.  Could this be some kind of sensory nerve problem that was related to the goiter?

Tingling of the face and hands could be low calcium...after my TT, I was told to watch out for those symptoms...

Do you know if this could happen with only the right lobe removed? I don't think my parathyroid glands were disturbed, not sure.

It's possible--normally, 2 of the parathyroids that regulate calcium are arranged on each side of the thyroid (total 4), so one of yours might have been bumped during surgery. Usually it's temporary, but you could have your calcium levels tested. Just a simple blood test.

I am 22 years old and I have been having twitches in the face when I touch it. sometimes I can feel my cheek and nose twitching a little bit but my husband see nothing. My feet (mainly toes) were falling a sleep all the time and it stop but should I get this checked out? I was wanting to know what this hypoparathyroidism is?
