Alopecia Areata and Overactive Thyroid

by yummymummylala, May 19, 2007 12:00AM
I have suffered from alopecia areata for about 13 years now, I am 28.  At the moment it is the worst it has ever been, i find it hard to try and cover the patches but to be honest, they are so big now it's really getting me down.  I gave lost my self confidence and rarely go out to social events anymore.
I have tried various treatments including: topical and oral steroids and just recently steroid injections into the scalp.
I have very little energy and tire easily, a recent blood test has shown that my FSH is above normal at 5.63 and urea in my blood is also above average at 8.2.
I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this, i go for further blood screening tests the week after next.

My daughter has buots of Alopecia but it is in remission for a few years now .. she had the classic exclamation point at one time in a pattern of hair loss and was only 4 yrs old at the time!!  Topical Steroids worked for her all the time as she is lucky.  No medical reason why she gets this ...... she is now 16 and doing fine with it.  The Dermatologist said that if the nape of the neck is not affected there is a 90% chance of regrowth.  That was an interesting statement I have never forgotten and I guess in my daughter's case she was correct as the nape was not involved.

I know they did thyroid panels on her and all was normal.

Had bad alopecia and in general major hair loss with Graves'.  Here are some otc products that might help:
Evening Primrose capsules to stop it from falling out
Biotin tablets to make it grow back in
Nioxin (I think is the name) is a shampoo, conditioner, leave in treatment
that even some balding men are using around here.  Ask your hair
           dresser for it.

I know how embarrassing and frustrating it can be, but hang in there.  Oh, by the way, I know some people who had the steriod injections and got no where but when my sister-in-law recommended the supplements there problems completely reversed themselves.  I never had the steroids, but the supplements worked for me.

Good luck.

DLA: Thanks, i will definatly try the evening primrose etc.  I'll just have to wait and see about the injections, i had them about 2 and a half years ago and they worked on the areas they targeted but the consultant at the time decided that after 3 bouts of them thay could give me no more.

chit chat: I have hair loss to both sides of the nape of my neck but not in the middle so i'll keep my fingers crossed...I've been waiting long enough so heres hoping!

Talked to my sis-in-law today and the name of the 3-step treatment is Nioxin.  She thinks it is the most amazing stuff in the world.  Hope something works for you, I know how hard it was for me nearly going bald and I'm not a very vane person.  Good Luck!
