My toddler daughter has stomach issues, throws up, HELP!

by lovethebops, Apr 07, 2007 12:00AM
My daughter (who is now 21 months old) has had spit up/throwing up issues since she was a newborn. I breastfed exclusively fo the first 6 mnths. of he rlife, and by 8 months she was exclusively drinking formula. When she was a newborn, she would do more than just 'spit up', she would throw up everything, so much it scared me to death that she was not getting anything into her system, even though her bowel movements were norm. She indeed grew out it, and rarely spit up after that, especially after switching to just formula. Now she is 21 months and has been drinking whole milk since she was 1 years old. It seems my daughter still has a weak stomach and has a very sensitive gag reflex, and throws up very easily. (still has normal bowel movements though, 1-2 a day)( I also have always had a weak stomach and a sensitive gag reflex myself.) If she starts coughing too hard, she almost always throws up. It seems my DH and I are cleaning up vomit several times a month. I have asked the doc about her throwing up, but he never seemd that concerned (BTW, I HATE the pediatrician my daughter has, and will be switching soon)..Does this seem like something out of the ordinary, or do some kids just have weaker stomachs and senstive gag reflexs? Has anyone else had this problem? Will it go away as she grows up?..(like I said, I Am not suprised she has stomach issues, many ppl in my immediate family have prob. w/their stomachs, mom, bro, me) Help..I'm sick of cleaning up vomit, and can't stomach the smell, espescially since I'm pregnant now, it makes me want to puke too..any suggestions?

have you checked into food allergies? I have a friend whose son was constantly vomiting and it turns out he is lactose intolerant. She stopped feeding him dairy and he stopped puking!

Good luck. I have lots of nausea with this pregnancy, and I can barely handle my 3 year old's everyday bodily functions, I couldn't imagine having to clean up vomit on a regular basis. Ugh.

with both of my children i had a similar problem.. we finally figured out that in the formula the DHA/ARA was hurting their stomachs and causing the vomitting and after that my second one had trouble with milk. i started her out on fat free and slowly worked my way up from there.. she is now 2 and doing very well on 2% milk. My pedi said that it is very common for children to be lactose intolerant and that most often it goes away on its own. bets wishes =-)

True dairy allergy is different from lactose intolerance. You can either get her tested through a blood test (on same sample they can run other common allergens) or you can simply cut out the cows milk (in everything, including cheese, yogurt, pastries, etc.) and try Rice Milk for perhaps 2 weeks, see if it improves (called elimination diet).

My son stopped puking after we discovered eggs, nuts, dairy and grains were extreme allergens (he was around 1 1/2). Vomiting that much means the lining of stomach/intestine is really affected---try a pediatric gastroenterologist if the allergy testing is negative.
