Muscle spasms aka charlie horses in pregnancy

by Darkestlight, Jun 15, 2007 12:00AM
Ok I used to have charlie horses bad a couple years ago. They say it's from a lack of potassium among other things. Well like I said I haven't had any for YEARS. I woke up this morning screaming and shaking cause I had a charlie horse soooooooooooooo bad. Well I know those can be common for lots of reasons, but being pregnant does so many things to you that I dunno if I should call  the doctor or what.... What's weird is the pharmacy gave me new prenatals and I just started taking them last night. Maybe these new ones don't have as much of something in them. Should I be worried? Any of you other women have these? They suck. Now it feels like someone tried to rip the muscle outta my leg and I'm limping around the house. :( Should I say something to the doctor?

It's just one of the many  joys of pregnancy! :) I get them about 3 times a night and can't move my legs! So fun!

I have always had leg trobles nerve ending probliems in my legs.  In the beginning of my pregnacy I had the BAD but by the grace of god I have not had any in a few weeks.  I stopped using salt My doc told me that can give you bad leg cramps and spasms along with the horrible charlie horses. Try not using salt and see if it helps!

LOL I'm addicted to salt! I salt everything!!! I don't know which would be worse for me....giving up salt or continuing leg cramps! lol

I ate lots of bananas just in case and still got them, just don't flex you leg, that brought them on for me.  I stretch my leg out straight and point my toes to the ceiling, it would stop shortly after.  Unfortunately it's one of those great pregnancy things.  Your pharmacy would not change your prenatal to something containing different levels of things without notifying your Dr. and you.  They probably changed the manufacturer which is really common, so I bet it's just a coincidence, but you can always ask the pharmacist if you are concerned with the product.

Hey! I didn't know if you'd go back to the thread from yesterday, so I'll write here! Regarding your shower invites...I am like you! I went and got my own. My sister in law is throwing my shower but is a total ditz and is always doing things last minute!  Besides, it gave me something to do! I actually addressed the envelopes for my side of the family. I figured I'd have to write out a list anyhow so why not just write it on the envelopes! lol I am a real take charge kind of person! I planned my whole entire bachelorette party just so I knew it would be done right! LOL

Critter: About the prenatals... my doctor gave me samples of some news ones that are much better and made me feel better well my samples ran out and I haven't been to see my OB yet so I had to go back to my old ones. I compared ingredients and I know the two are much different. Sigh* I'll ask for more of the new ones when I go back next wk.

Ruby: i hear ya. I mean I feel for my mom and I don't want to hurt her feelings at all. I said something to her yesterday about when it was going to be, and different things... Shes not sure. I mean I'm only 24wks maybe I shouldn't be worrying bout this yet, but if I don't it will never get done. *sigh*

I get them to now that I'm pregnant.  It is because you are dehydrated.  Your body is craving magnesium and potassium.  It's horribly painful and it always seems to happen in the middle of the night or while you are sleeping.  What is that?  The best advice I can give is do not point your toes while you are experiencing it.  It makes it worse.  Just keep your foot flexed and massage the area.  Make sure to drink a lot of water and keep your body hydrated.
