TTC and TSH 3.8

by bethlv, Jan 06, 2007 12:00AM

I'm TTC. I had a babe October '05. I was having weird periods (normal for one day and then spotting up to a week afterwards) since giving birth. I also developed vitiligo on my hand and wrist. Because I wanted to get pregnant, I went to my gyno who did a pap smear, ultrasound and a TSH test. All was fine according to her. However, my TSH level was 3.8 which I've read over and over again is high if you want to get pregnant - should be a 1 or 2. I then went to a naturopathic doctor who had me take additional tests:

Total T-4 7.9 (reference range 4.5-12)

Free T-3 290 (reference range 230-420)

I've been put on Levoxyl at a dosage of 50mcg - the goal is to get my TSH between a 1 and 2. I've only been on it for 3 days. I will also be using a progesterone cream to help lenghten my periods and stop the spotting as per my ND's instructions.

My question: Does 50mcg sound too high or just right given the 3.8 TSH.  Also, does this sound like early menopause based on my periods.  I'm 38.  Thanks

there is no way of knowing if it is too much or too little
when i was first diagnosed with hypothyroid; my TSH was 85 and they started me on 75 mcg; i am currently taking 150 mcg and TSH is about 1.5

you have to take it for a month and get blood taken again
there is no other way of knowing how much or little you need
