why would a hemorrhagic cyst result in ovary removal?

by butterfly72977, Feb 02, 2004 12:00AM
I am 26 years old and have recently had my ovary removed.  I had the other one removed at age 12.  It all happened so fast.  On Tuesday I had severe pain.  That day a pelvic ultrasound determined that I had a cyst that was 6.7cm.  I was referred to my gynecologist who did not have an available appointment for 2 weeks.  By that Thursday the pain was so excruciating that I went to the emergency room.  I had another ultrasound completed which showed similar results as the first one.  The gynecologist never examined me but insisted that I go home and take pain meds.  My primary physician admitted me into the hospital.  Thirty hours later and ongoing pain the gyno examined me and decided to perform a laporscopy, which would involve draining the cyst.  During surgery the doctor found that the cyst was filled with blood (heorrhagic cyst) and I needed my ovary removed entirely.  The doctor also stated that it was 10cm at that time.  The question I face is wether this type of cyst is visible during a pelvic ultrasound and did the doctor wait too long to perform surgery?  The result of this matter is that I am unable to have any more children and I am currently going through menopause!

I had my ovary and cyst removed last week - it too was hemmorhagic.  I opted for the whole thing to be removed ( Im kinda a cancer freek) and due to the face I have 5 children it wasnt even a thought.  But they did find my cyst on a trans vaginal untrasound , and I had just started to have pain.  Im not sure why yours wasnt seen on the ultrasound and from what I have researched just because it is hemmorahgic doesnt mean the ovary needs to come out- my doc was gonna take my cyst out by itself and it measured 6.7 cm.  I am feeling your pain , I would feel very violated if I wasnt consulted before such a life altering decision was made.  My thought would have been if it wasnt talked about before surgery it should not have been done without your consent - I would have rather been sewn back up , tried other methods to deal with the pain and had another child if you werent sure you were done having children.   Good luck
