Low back pain with Ovarian Cyst

by Bailey1002, Sep 13, 2005 12:00AM
I am 45 yrs. old with low back pain for 5 months. My family dr. sent me to Othropedists, they sent me to Rhumatology. I have had numerous x-rays, MRI's, a bone scan, and lots of blood tests. So far all they found was a 4mm cyst on my ovary. My OB/GYN say no way it can be the cause of all this low back pain. But all these tests results are negative for anything so far. The pain is from my lower back, into my butt and back of thighs. I am scheduled for a US this Thurs. The MRI showed that the cyst is hemmoragic. My OB/Gyn seems very laid back and I on the other hand am paniced. I had the CA125 and it was negative. I had a hystorectomy 6 yrs ago. Has anyone else with these cysts had low back pain like this?.I am getting very frustrated with the pain and no answers yet.

I don't know if a cyst that small could cause back pain.   I'm not a doctor but it sounds as if a nerve could be pinched. Is the pain constant or only there while lifting or turning? I wonder if sciatica would show up on those tests?  Sorry I am not much help.  Hope you get some relief soon.  Keep us posted.

If the cyst is hemorrhagic, then it is bleeding into the abdomen.  This bleeding, and the body's response to the bleeding, can cause pain.   While lower back pain (often associated with pain running down into the upper legs) is indeed one of the many symptoms often associated with an ovarian mass, I cannot recall it being the only symptom mentioned by anyone.    But that is not to say it cannot happen!

I personally would seek a second opinion, even though the cyst is small.  It is better to be safe and proactive in medical matters such as this one.

I missed typed the size, it should have read 4 cm. OB/Gyn says the size of a plum. Yesterday I even had cramps. Six years since the hysterectomy and that was a first! I called & left a message for my OB/Gyn, she never called me back. I feels like she is being too laid back, but she makes me feel like I'm too worried. Hopefully tomorrows US will give me some answers.

If your GYN isn't going to have the courtesy to call you back you should find a doctor that will. I know that's hard to do because unless you have a referral from someone you trust you don't know who you are getting. My doctor wants to do laproscopic surgery to check/remove 1 or both ovaries yet he doesn't answer all my questions and he doesn't listen to how i feel.  I found another doctor. I have an appointment the 26th and if this doctor will not answer my questions and listen to what I am saying than I will find another. I'm tired of doctors treating us like cattle.

If you really like this doctor than call every hour until you get a return call.

Good luck...

I have the exact same cyst. They told me that it was 4cm. They sent me to my G.P. and they told me that the pain was due to the cyst not a kidney infection or whatever the gyn thought. I am on 650mg of oxycodone every 4 hours and 800mg of ibuphrofin 3 times per day and that is mildly stopping the back pain and the migrains that I have had evey day for the last three weeks since my cycle started a week early due to the size of the cyst. If you have found out anything more please help and share the info. Thanks for taking the time to read this sincerly, Mandiye

I was having pain in the right side of my abdomen for about a week and I went to my GYN, he found a cyst on my right ovary, and said it was nothing to worry about. The pain got worse and worse until I ended up at the hospital getting a catcan. The only thing on there was the one inch cyst on my ovary. The message Im getting from all the doctors is that its no big deal. I cant even pick my one year old son up because the pain in my lower back is so bad. I have an appointment with my GYN again at 2pm today, and I am going to put it strait out there for him that something has to be done, if not, Im going to someone else who will fix it. I cannot deal with this pain everyday. I cannot take pain pills and work, and certainly cant stay home from work for the rest of my life. The back pain feels like someone has my lower spine in a clamp. Is there anyone else having the same bad back pain that I am? Has anyone out there gotten any real help with their problem? Im not sure what the doctors are thinking, but it makes me wonder if any of them have ever had an ovarian cyst, maybe then they would do something about it instead of letting us sit here in pain. I do feel for all of you women with the same problem, I know the pain is real. I hope there is resolution soon for all of us. Take care.

Well I can understand your frustration.  I went into the ER about 1 week ago. I had severe pain on my left side that radiated in or around lower back. In the hospital they took bloodwork, urinalysis, ct scan no contrast/ x-rays. They discovered that I had a unrinary track infection. and said I show something close to my ovary (left) could be a cyst to see my gyn.  I went the next day. Told him what the ER said and he said he read the reports and they said nthing about a cyst.  Although I was able to read them, it said I had two cyst on my left side and one on the right.  Plus dominate follicles (what does this mean). He told me My sonogram looks like all my women organs are doing just fine.

Not sure what to think about that, he is suppose to be a top gyn doctor.

I have pain to where I can't lay on my right side, left or on my stomach.

I then went to my surgeon whom I trust.  He discovered I have an ahernia in my abdomen area, what kind of symptoms can that cause.  Very frustrated right now.  I am miserable I am not able to miss work, I am a single mother with a 5yr old.

Can any give me some heads up on this

Thank you

Dawn
