Taxol vs. taxotere - any difference?

by Sherri52, Oct 23, 2005 12:00AM
After completing one chemo of carboplatin and taxol I developed perapheral neuropathy in my hands and feet.  The Dr. felt I would do better on taxotere which has fewer side effects.  Question?  Is this drug as effective as the taxol?  If it is, why, since the side effects are less significant, isn't this given as a first line chemotherapy?  I've had no body aches/bones aches from the taxotere, just a significant drop in white blood count.  Any insights will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.   Sherri

I am receiving Taxotere and was told not only was it equally as effective but could be given less frequently and concurrently.  In terms of side effects, I am having neuropathy from it and there is concern over potential fluid retention.  I've been given bursts of dexamethasone, a steroid to help control this.  I have also had bone pain but it may hay be from the neulasta, an injection I give myself 24 hrs after each tx to stimulate my bone marrow and bring up my blood counts after they've been knocked out.

In my oncologists practice this is the most current, up to date protocol  for my cancer type-Breast -ER/PR+/HER 2- (I am receiving Cytoxan, Adriamycin and Taxotere- 3 rounds every 4 weeks times 4).  Another pt of his that I know received A & C first then 4 rounds of Taxol as recently as 1 1/2 years ago.  I feel lucky I get it all at once.  I know he's keeping current and studies continue to change and improve treatments.

I am not sure so do not quote me on this but i think that taxotere is a milder form of taxol. I do know that it is a sister drug so to speak. And for the record, abraxane is a reformation of taxol. If I am wrong here i hope that someone will correct me.

I didn't notice the age of the original post either!  I was just up having a rough night and searched taxotere!
