Mine was 18 cm and it was NOT beneign. Please... and please shows more urgency and maybe even exaggerate a bit to your doctor. I was not in much pain until two days before I went to the ER. When the pain really hits you, you will not be able to move. I laid in bed more 6 hours without moving at all. My friend offered to take me to the ER but I just couldn't move an inch and I didn't want to call 911. It was very close to rupture.
99 % of a cyst like that (mine was dermoid or tereatoma)is beneign. So I was the "special" 1%. For a cyst bigger than 10 cm, the doctor should suspect the possibility of its nature. When you schedule the operation, you must request to talk to a gyn/oncologist. My situation was that the doctor didn't suspect anything. He was to open me up again and found out what stage I was in. Don't let them make this mistake!!! You need to be proactive! Even if it's cancerous, the curable rate of this kind of tumor is highly curable. So don't worry and deal with it one day at a time. Take care and I'll be thinking of you!

Did your cyst rupture and send you to the ER or was it just the pain you had that sent? What type of ovca was it? My cysts ahve recently ruptured and my doc has not called back even though the report was faxed to his office within an hour after I had the u/. He has had surgical cases all week and I have my pre-op visit on Monday. I know if it was malignant like they suspected then there really is not much they can do at this point because the damage has been done.
Mine was not ruptured, but very closed. MY type is called Immature Teratoma. Teratoma is the same as dermoid cyst. Do you know what kind of cyst you have? 99% of the teratoma is beneign (mature), and only 1% is immature (cancerous). Teratoma is a kind of germ cell tumor, usually happens in teenage girls or young women is their 20s. How bad is your pain? If you pain is very bad then you should go to the ER, though I know your pre-op appointment will be on Monday. I went to the ER and had an emergency the next day. Again, it depends on your situation, but it doesn't hurt to request to consult a gyn/onco or your surgeon should have a gyn/onco on call at least. Take very good care and hope the best for you! - Pianist
Since my post I have recieved a surgery date, January 20th and it is believed that my cyst is not cancerous, at least until it is examined. My blood test show no elevated levels so, the specialist is fairly confident that it is cancer free. WHEW! Although it is growing, what seems like everyday and boy oh boy is it starting to get uncomfortable!! The top of it is past my 4th rib and I look more and more pregnant everyday!!
It is unbelievable that a women can walk around with such a massive tumor and not be taken care of in a timely fashion. I have been aware of this since mid November and by the time I have surgery it will be 9 weeks! It's a shame that we and our tumors are not taken more seriously!! I'm outraged! When Canada is done with our federal election, I, for one, am going to raise some hell!! I'm not too sure what I can do, but I will do something.
What is really disturbing, here in Canada, is that when sitting in an emergency room or doc's office and a worker comes in hurt on the job and needing stitches, he or she is seen without hesitation and we, who have massive tumors in our bellies are made to wait and ignored. It's a crying shame!!

You girls hang in there!!
I had a hysterectomy 7 years ago and chose to leave my ovary and fallopian tubes since I was only 31 years old. I just went to the gyn recently for an annual exam and they felt tomething. Proceeded to send me for and pelvic ultrasound and transvaginal us. Test revealed multiple ovarian systs bilatteraly the largest one on the left ovary measuring 8.5x5.0x7.0cm. which meams 60 millimeters or 6 inches. Very big if you ask me. The doctor proceeded to do a ca 125, fsh, lh, tsh all came back normal. The ca-125 was 6. He then referred me to a oncologist gynecologist who immediately scheduled me for surgery. I am scheduled for a bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy with bilateral lysis of adhesions on jan 25, 2006. In the meantime of I have developed alot of gi symptoms to boot and have no idea if they are related to any of this. I had an endoscopy the other day and showed I have a hiatal hernia, esophageal strictire, and gerd. Now need to take nexium 40 mg bid indefintely. I am very nervous and very concerned that I may indeed have ovarian cancer. All the best ot everyone..........
