Recovery from laparoscopy

I had laparoscopic surgery to remove a cyst (benign, thank God!) last Tuesday. I'm still pretty tender in the area and still have some vaginal bleeding. I talked to the doctor's office yesterday, and they said this wasn't unusual after a week. I'm curious, though, how long it took others of you to recover after a laparoscopy. How long were you still sore and tender around the incisions/pelvis area? When did you get back to feeling like you could move normally? How long did you have vaginal bleeding afterward?

Hi there --

I'm four weeks post-laparotomy, and just beginning to feel normal. My stomach is still tender and swollen; the incision is still pretty hard to the touch. I still have moderate bladder problems, and what I believe is ovarian phantom pain. I never had vaginal bleeding. I've been told by my surgeon and his staff that full, complete recovery can take up to a year.

I had my laproscopic surgery on May 1, and I no longer have any tenderness around the incisions at all. I can now cough and sneeze without pain. My bleeding stopped after the first few days but the nurse in the hospital told me that the bleeding could stick around as long as it wasn't to much.

Hi, it took me about 6 weeks to feel even close to "normal". My incisions are still sore, especially the one by my navel and I am still having some weird sensations where the ovary that was removed used to be. I was not happy with my gyne, so I am seeing a new doc next week. Hoping he will have some answers to how long until I feel really "myself" again.



Take things easy and don't overdo.

Hi my laparoscopy was on 5/5 and my post op was today. Even though I am feeling pretty good I had a rough weekend when I tried to do to much. (some planting and just plain not taking it slowly.) Now that I am once again really watching how I move aound get up twist and turn I am feeling pretty good again. But the doc told me to give it another two good weeks before any NORMAL activities. I am back working but just need to refrain from moving to much.(Twisting in my chair ,reaching etc..) I did not have any bleeding but I do not have a uterus. So please take it easy and don't rush it. Believe me!! Thought I did some damage.Take care!

Thank you for the replies! I think I overdid it, going shopping on Friday and planting some things in the garden on Saturday. Even though I didn't do any real digging, that was probably too soon.

Finally...I found information on the recovery from laparoscopic surgery!  Had mine on the 22nd and thought I'd be feeling quite well by now.  Not even close.  Still a lot of gas pain, fatigue and soreness.   My Dr tells me this is quite normal and I shouldn't listen to all the "hype" that you read about quickie recovery from this type of surgery.  She said surgery is still surgery and your body needs to heal.  I had 1 ovary/tube removed plus a D&C.  Fortunately all tests came back fine.  Thank you all for the info.

I am currently recovering from a lap done 1/29/08.  I have to say that my 1st lap was very painful and the current one wasn't.  Not to say EMS was called for my pain to the side of my stomach to my shoulder (gas), Doc used air for the surgery.  So the day of the surgery was quite the bummer.  Other then that, I am ok but feeling sluggish.  The right side I have discomfort where the surgery was done, some how when I stand or sit for a long period of time it begins to bother me.  I am up and about but pray that soon there will be a cure for Ovarian Cyst (Endometrosis).  I can bare another surgery, its very stressful. Thanks god it was benign.

I've had 4 Laps and each recovery was different.  It took a long time for my swelling to go down and the drainage lasted a couple weeks.  Just make sure you don't get constipated.  The fatigue was the worst (for me).

My friend had her Lap last Friday and was back in the hospital yesterday because she could not urinate and it all backed up and made her swell.

Everyone heals at different paces............

I had Lap done last week to remove right ovary.  3 small incisions, 1 on belly button, and on each side of the pelvic area.     I have no pain in my right side, but my left side feels like it was punched by Mike Tyson, and it feels that pain will stay for awhile even when the doctor said typical recovery is one week.   I could do light work now but can't stand up without holding my left side.  My first thought was they removed the wrong ovary 'till doc explained that right ovary was forced out through the left incision.  That explains it.

I had my laparascopy done 4 days ago . Ovarian cyst removal with part of the ovary .
I don't feel pain as such , just some pressure and pulling sensation in the belly button area when I walk . However my stomack is bloated , lots of intestines movements , today I had some diarea and  nousea .
