Enlarged Ovary

by aseaton, Jun 06, 2007 12:00AM
On June 29,I was told in a pelvic exam that I have a pelvic mass.  Gyn sceduled an ultrasound for June 4. Ultrasound technician told me there was no mass, but I have an enlarged ovary approximately 8 cm.  Gyn scheduled surgery for next Wednesday, June 13.  He wants to remove both ovaries, uterus, and tubes.  My conern is cancer.  I just turned 50 on June 5.
I have no symptoms.  I have some abdominal discomfort after I eat.  It is more of a fullness.  I have been scouring the internet to find information, but nothing regarding just an enlarged ovary. Gyn did not tell me I have any fluid.  I have experienced an increase abdomen size over the past year, but just contributed it to my age and perimenapause.  I have been taking hrt for the past three years.  I welcome any information.

I understand removing the mass on the ovary.   I don't understand why the full hysterectomy.  I would ask the Dr. for your full reports and a second opinion ideally you should see a GYN/ONC especially if there is any question of cancer.  You need to talk with this physician and find out what he is thinking and why so quick, you really need more information to make a decision about what anyone does to your body.  If he suspects cancer you want the GYN/ONC to do the surgery because they give us the best chance, call and get answers and a second opinion.

My doctor just called yesterday to tell me that my ultrasound revealed an enlarged ovary, and he wanted to repeat the ultrasound in a few weeks at a different time in my cycle to see if it was hormone related. I said "good, fine" and scheduled one 5 weeks from now, then hung up the phone and started thinking.

What does this mean? Of course, I did an online search of "enlarged ovary" and the C-word immediately reared it's ugly head. Now I'll panic for 5 weeks.

I was too surprised by my doctor's call to know what questions to ask, and they won't commit to anything without further tests anyway. What are the chances that is benign? Do I really have to wait five weeks? Does anyone know- what are the benign causes of this condition? What should I do in the meantime?
