Extreme buttock pain/hip pain

by Mervy, Mar 03, 2006 12:00AM
I have suffered from extreme stiffness and pain in my right hip for over 2 years now. I have difficulty sitting for any length of time and feel like I am sitting on a "lump" of sorts and it is painful.  I play baseball and am a runner. The pain does not bother me when I am standing or even running,,,, it is excurciating with sitting especially... I have been looking into ischial tuberosity bursitis and think this may be the answer.. I have been for tests and physicians do not have an answer and I have done all the physio in the world with no help. I am fairly healthy otherwise and in good shape. Any information regarding this pain in the butt would be appreciated as I am running out of things to look at and do not want to live the rest of my life in pain.

Try looking up sacroiliitis (it really is spelled with 2 i's in a row). The sacrum is the vertebrae just above the tailbone. There is actually a joint between the sacrum and the pelvis. It doesn't really bend, but it does flex. This is the sacroiliac joint. If there is inflamation there it can be very painful in the buttock, hip, and the lower flank on that side. Have you had an x-ray? This shows if there is more space on one side of the sacrum than on the other. How about a course of prednisone? Have you taken Motrin or Naprosyn on a schedule for 2 weeks to see if the pain goes away? An Orthopedist or a Rheumatologist would be a good idea.

Have heard of sciatica and investigated this a long time ago. I do not have pain down my leg or any numbness,,, any thoughts on ischial tuberosity disorders??

Okay, be careful who you listen to. There is no chance that medication will help you with solving this problem and is unlikely to help with the pain. I would venture two 3 guesses at this point. First would be Ischial bursitis. However this pain would be local and would go away soonner than later. The second would be piriformis syndrome. the pirifomis muscle runs from the anterior border of the sacrum (the tailbone, not the vertebrae above the tailbone) to the greater trochanter of the femur(thigh bone). This is common among runners, and is painful with sitting for long periods of time, due to irritation of the sciatic nerve. This muscle can become laiden with trigger points (knots) which can be treated with deep tissue massage. The last guess would be a S1 radiculopathy, which is a disc problem. But it doesnt really sound like that. Try putting a golf/tennis ball on the floor and sitting on it on you painful side. This will be excrutiatinly painful, but will help tremendously if you do it a few times. Find the area that is most painful, hold it there for 30 seconds and move onto another sore spot. Do this in the gluteal region, and the hamstring.

I too have had buttock pain for 5 months now.  I do not recall any reason for the injury.  I am active, but not an athelete.  I am 5"2 - 105 lbs.  I do have a 3cm benign bone tumor right next to my SI joint, but have had MRI, CT scan and bone scan...which lead my Orthopedic Oncologist to believe it is not the cause of my buttock pain since it is has been there for at least 5 years.  It hurts after sitting...and is relieved my sleep.  I wake up and feel fine...until I get in the car to drive to work.  My chiropractor says piriformis also...but I have no leg pain.  Any thoughts?  My bone lesion was negative on a bone and spect scan...and low signal on T1 - low to intermediate signal on T2 MRI.  I am not sure what do to next...I have not had a biopsy but I am not thrilled about poking around in my pelvis.  Any advice would be apprecaited.

I have lateral hip and upper butt pain that comes and goes. I have had this for over a year. One week I could sit in a chair all day long and not have any pain, and another week I could only sit for 20 minutes before my butt and lateral hip started hurting. I have severe pain when I stretch my internal and external rotator muscles of both of my hips. I feel pain deep in my hip when I perform the butterfly stretch (flexion, abduction, and external rotation of the hips). I also get severe pain when I flex, adduct, and internally rotate my hip. I cannot figure out what is wrong, and I want to fix the problem. Anyone have any advice.

Im concerned about my mom. She has had this pain in her hip for about 3 months.  It is on her right side and she says it feels like a ball of fire in her right buttocks area. There is no relief. It hurts more when sitting but does hurt when she is up moving around. OTC pain relievers do not help and has tried applying heat but also does not help. Also, she will have a dull pain that will radiate towards her pelvis. That comes and goes and is infrequent, while the other pain is always there, just worse at sometimes. any ideas???????
