Enlarged Optic Nerve in Left Eye with Drusen

by eidnim, Mar 08, 2006 12:00AM
Last August I went to have pre testing for Lasik Surgery.  Upon my examination I was told that I had an enlarged optic nerve in my left eye. I was sent for an MRI the next morning, everything was normal.  Sent to a Neuro-Ophthalmologist as well as a Oculoplastics Specialist, nothing was conclusive.  They took visual fields tests and my left eye showed significant differences. They also did a B scan and found that I have Drusen.  I went back again in 3 months for another MRI,again it was normal.  I am farsighted in my left eye only, my right is normal.  I have frequent headaches in my left eye that go from the from of my eye to the back of my neck.  My only headaches are of this kind.  I do not have any of the "normal" symptoms of having an enlarged optic nerve, my eye isn't red or swollen nothing by just looking at me is different.  I can't seem to get any answers as to whether or not this could just be the way my eye is or if it may be caused by something else.  Could this be normal in my case that it's just the way it is and that is why my vision is different in my left eye.  Should I keep getting MRI's every 3 months? I am a +2.oo in contacts, I only wear the one, nothing in my right.  NO significant changesin my rx.  I only started wearing glasses/contacts about 5 years ago. I was getting bad headaches, so I decided to see an eye doctor.  NO one ever told me they saw that my optic nerve was swollen in the past.  I would like to go and get a second opinion just to see if perhaps another doctor has seen this before.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think that Optic Neuritis is a condition that gradually gets better, here's a link

Are drusen always uni or bi-lateral?  Do they always result in macular degeneration?

I have ION from untreated blood loss during spine surgery.
