shocking sensations

Last nite I had another new "symptom". I was asleep but jolted awake by what I thought was some kind of seizure - it probably wasn't a seizure - but like I was being shocked but it included my whole body and was really noticeable in my "brain".  I know this sounds crazy - it even does to me - but anybody else ever have that happen?  Also, (this is weird too!) when I showered this morning and washed my hair, the top of my head hurt - was sore.....hmmm  Any info or thoughts are appreciated.

thanks!

Have numbness, tingling in my left side - including my face. Most of the time it's not completely numb - just reduced sensations.  Also having shocking/stinging sensations in my left leg - only in two spots - not the whole leg - one in my upper thigh and one spot down close to my ankle.  Having serious memory problems - sound like some bumbling idiot when I carry on conversations with others.  I know what I need to say but sometimes I forget it before I say it.  I was diagnosed with bipoar disorder about a year ago - hypomanic type.  Taking Levothyroxine for hypothyroidism - taking Lamictal and Elavil for bipolar/depression - occasionally Xanax for anxiety/social anxiety disorder (really need help for that b/c my sister is getting married in July..) I am in therapy as well....

Also have had short lived headaches that are severe for around half an hour.  Pain/soreness behind my left eye along with some blurriness. Geez, I guess that's it....oh - and I'm only 38!

BTW, I forgot to tell you that I also have Fibromyalgia, too!

by myproblem, May 21, 2006 12:00AM
I don't really have any good suggestions except that it all seems neurological. Mental illness is frequently neurological in cause, the nerve pain, the fibromyalgia, the shocking sensations the other night...

It all adds up to you need to go get an MRI at least. Your body seems to be sending signals for inappropriate reasons, whether those are pain signals, or shocking signals. Have you ever looked up neuropathic pain? It means that your body sends oveerreactive pain signals, and the pain lasts way beyond what would be considered appropriate. Neurontin is one medication I'm aware of that is commonly used to treat neuropathic pain. Sorry I can't give you a better idea of what other test would be helpful, but there is sure to be someone else who will have a good idea.

You should see your doctor it may be a stroke coming on. When did this all start? Also, sleep study may help if this occurs mainly at night. Could be sleep apnea?

Hi,I totally agree with  Myproblems  Neurontin is a good choice of medication for you personally as it is used for neurological conditions as well as being  used to treat bipolar. My son has bipolar and neurontin is one of the best medications he has been on (last one he tried and proved to be very effective .) The electric shock feelings are probably neurological symptoms. I get these and boy do they hurt. Just because you have bipolar the Drs shouldn't ignore your other symptoms . They may not be related to bipolar. Best Of Luck. Take Care C

I just read your other post. The itching sounds like an allergic reation to the medicine. If it is an allergic reaction it could also cuase many other wierd symptons. Talk to your doctor. Try all new medications. It's worth a try.

Thanks so much for your posts - I have an appointment with a PA at my general physicians office - she seems more willing to listen to me and to follow up with appropriate tests.  I have much to talk to her about.  Plan on sitting down today and making a list of symptoms and things I need to ask/talk about.  I will post after my visit to let you know how things went.

Thanks again!

I had an overnite sleep study about two years ago - and now that I think of it, I don't remember if doctor told me the results....then again, my memory really sucks.  I agree with all the symptoms being neurological in origin - and I am going to push for another MRI - had one about 6 or 7 months ago.  It was clean.  That whole thing waking up with the feeling of being shocked and totally paralyzed for just a few seconds was a really scarry feeling - I hope that doesn't happen again.  I'm almost afraid to go to sleep now.  Good thing I do have Xanax for emergency anxiety!

Hey Guys!

Prayers have finally been answered - I had to worry the **** out of my GP - but finally she gave me a referral to neurologist.  Now just hoping he can help me or atleast rule out alot of stuff.  Kinda looking forward to this - although I know that I do not need to get my hopes up - I want that MRI to be clear - and then maybe he will know the next step and I can go from there - I will just feel better now that this is on the way.

I'll let you guys know how it goes - will have Xanax with me for the testing - needed it the last time too!

Write down every single symptom and every question you would like to discuss. This might be a one shot chance since the appointment probaly had to be arthorirized. Try to start with a fresh mind/new with the worst symptom being what you discuss. Sometimes I think we confuse doctors with to much info. Let him do the investigating.Don't tell him whats wrong let him figure it out. Do you know what I mean? What would we do without those xanax?

LOL! Yeah, thank god for Xanax!

Had one of those "seizure" things again last nite

that's twice this week!  It is very frightening - filled with absolute fear and I am paralyzed - cannot move at ALL!

I did some research this afternoon at the library and found that there is something called sleep paralysis - sounds very similar except all the info I saw said nothing about the "electrical shock" feeling.  Anyway, I am also going to see my opthomologist on Thursday to see if he can tell me anything about these sudden stabbing headaches in my left temple and behind my left eye.

Anyway, I guess everything else is just hurry up and wait!

C ya, Charley

Sounds like "exploding head syndrome" which both my brother and I have had since our teen years.  Strange name but it does describe the sensation.  My neurologist has me on provigil as I also suffer from several symptoms of narcolepsy.  Since the provigil I have not had an episode.  It took me years to get diagnosed and had been put on tranqs for"hysteria". prior to finding someone who took me seriously.  If it feels as if your head is exploding--sound and jolt then that could be your answer.  Good luck.  PS I went undiagnosed for almost 40 miserable years!!
