Painful lump under left arm

by SH1983, Jul 17, 2006 12:00AM
A painful, raised lump appeared on my left underarm earlier today that I am concerned about.  I am planning on having it looked at by a doctor, but I was hoping for some immediate opinions.  I am a 22-year-old, otherwise healthy female.  I have no history of serious illness and I'm not taking any medications.

There are a few things I thought of when the lump appeared that may or may not be related:

I have had a lesion (on the same side as the underarm lump) removed from my left shoulder two years ago by a dermatologist, however that was relatively minor.  Also, I just started my period today (and the lump appeared today).  Could it be that hormones caused the lump?  Though that does not explain why a lump would appear now, all of a sudden.  In addition, I've been to a doctor in the past year because I had some unusual breast pain (that his since gone away).  There was an ultrasound done, but no problems were found.

I have no clue what might be causing it.  I have read that it could be a number of things.  Any insight on this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

S

How big is it?  Are you thinking it is a lymph node or could it be an ingrown hair.  If it is a lymph node then you could have a scratch or something on your arm/hand.  I wouldn't worry unless it stays there for a few weeks.

good luck.

Hi,

Underarm lumps are axillary lymph nodes which could be enlarged secondary to infection or even trauma. They are usually enlarged when a new deodorant is used, after shaving or waxing the underarm area.

You should refrain from the above for a few days and keep the area clean and apply calamine lotion to help soothe the areas.

The pain could be due to trauma, injury, tight clothes, bad posture, lifting heavy weights, infections of the lymph nodes etc.

This could also be seen secondary to hormonal fluctuations as seen during menstrual cycles - which seems to be the reason in your case.

You could try some warm compresses and oral pain relief medications and see if it helps with his symptoms.

Let us know if you have any more doubts and keep us posted on how he is doing.

Hope this helps.

Regards.
