small clusters of bumps that appear every few months

by passport, Sep 18, 2006 12:00AM
Hello, I have a cluster of small bumps that itches terribly. The bumps appear every couple of months for about 5 years now. When I scratch them the cluster gets bigger and spreads a little within the same area. The bumps appearance when scratched are white (like a bump on the face that needs to be busted). Sometimes I bust them and pus comes out. Also when scratched then tend to hurt really bad and it then becomes tight. What can this be. I'm really nervous. They always come back to the same area which is right behind my breast or below my arm pit. Please help me with this. Thanks

It's possible they are just clogged hair follicles.( Ingrown hairs). Just like a pimple, hair follicles get clogged too. Try to use an antibacterial cream ( bacitracin works ) when you notice them, but don't use more than the instructions tell you.I've even used preparation H on blind pimples to reduce the swelling when I've had to go somewhere the next day! Good Luck.

Hi,

It could be eczema, sweat dermatitis, allergic reactions or eczema.

You need to wash the areas several times with fresh water. Do not use any cosmetic products at the sites.

Apply calamine lotion at the site of the lesions and see if it helps. You could take some oral antihistamine medications like cetrizine or loratadine. You need to maintain a good personal hygiene .

Anti-itch drugs, often antihistamine, may reduce the itch during a flare up of eczema, and the reduced scratching in turn reduces damage and irritation to the skin.

For mild-moderate eczema a weak steroid may be used (e.g. hydrocortisone or desonide), whilst more severe cases require a higher-potency steroid (e.g. clobetasol propionate, fluocinonide).

Eczema can be exacerbated by dryness of the skin. Moisturizing is one of the most important self-care treatments for sufferers of eczema. Keeping the affected area moistened can promote skin healing and relief of symptoms.

It would be advisable to consult a skin specialist for your symptoms and a proper clinical examination.

Regards.
