Constantly fatigued, please help

by leealee, Feb 11, 2007 12:00AM
Hello, i'm a 21 year old male. I am always tired and could fall asleep about any time in the day.  Also, I don't have the energy I used to. I had tests done such as blood work, physical exams, echocardiogram, ekg, chest x-ray, holter monitor and ekg, and they all came back fine...i did have sinus arrhythmia which the doctor said was normal. I was wondering what could be wrong with me? Why am I always tired and fatiued with a lack of energy? Also the doctors said I was dehydrated and had mononucleosis a while ago and they couldn't tell when i had it. Could this still be a reason? How long can Mono affect you? PLease help me!

Did your physician do EBV (Epstein Barr Virus) titers on your blood ?

by leealee, Feb 11, 2007 12:00AM
I'm not sure exactly what they did with the blood. But I also wanted to add that I have been depressed lately, just not able to get happy. Also, I think I had a panic attack a week ago or so.

I would definitely consider getting treated for your depression and seeing if your symptoms improve. Depression can most certainly cause you to be fatigued.

It could be that you need a sleep study done to see if you have sleep apnea or other sleep interuptions.  What are your other symptoms if any?

Ask your doctors to check your thyroid levels.

The only other suggestion I have... is if you continue to experience fatigue after all of these tests and treatment for your depression symptoms (if your physician & you feel that is even necessary)... then check and make sure that your physician tested you for Epstein Barr Virus. If you check out the link below, you will see that chronic fatigue syndrome is a usual suspect in people who have had mono and have been having extreme fatigue for over 6 months. Please take good care of yourself and get some rest... your body is asking for it.

I know exactly how you feel.  I am a 22 year old female and i pretty much slept through all of my sophomore year in college - i was completely lethargic, and grumpy, it felt like recovering from a flu - when your body is all weak, except there was no flu, just that achy feeling - I went to the doctor to get migraine medicine because the stress falling so far behind in school was causing and sort of mentioned in passing that my sister said i slept an abnormal amount - they did blood tests that checked my thyroid level and found out I had hypothyroidism - it can show up in a lot of symptoms (depression, weight gain, laziness) and is most often brushed off and misdiagnosed as depression (because too much sleep makes you feel depressed) - but i knew i wasn't depressed - nevertheless, i am now on thyroid meds that bring me up to functional and anti-depressants that help keep me feeling good when i am awake - life isn't perfect, but trust me, if you have hypothyroidism, letting it deteriorate is awful - ask your doctor to check your thyroid levels

You said they told you about the mono that you had at some point; so they must have tested you for EBV or CMV.  I am guessing it was EBV which causes infectious mono, but make sure with them.  Depending how long ago it was or if it is still active, you could be suffering symptoms from that.  Staying up late, not resting plenty, and drinking do not help your body fight and eliminate this virus (that is why it is common for young college kids to have EBV/Mono).

low b6 causes panic attacks and depression. Epstien barr can come back when you get run down.My doc said he thinks I had mono when I was little because I had my tonsils out. He said you don't get mono without strep. It came back on me at 30 something. And I 'm still tired .I'm now 53.  Thats chronic fatique. Maybe you are low in vitamin b12. That helps with energy.Eat a great diet, get sleep  ,and take care of yourself. If you don't who will.
