by ohmeowzer, May 31, 2007 12:00AM
i have pain on the right side of my rib cage. i had my gall bladder removed about 4 years ago. it hurts all the time the pain goes to my back. i don't seem constipated but i wonder if it's gas. i am a RN so i naturally think the worse.. my liver. my urine looks normal and my stools are a little light in color but normal in form. the pain started about 4 days ago to get worse. i have had this pain on and off after i had my gall bladder removed but it seems worse these past 5 days with the nausea. i threw up for one day. i just want to know.. i read in one forum the dr said liver diease isn't painful... how can that be?  i of course haven't seen a Dr yet.. being the good nurse i am.. has anyone had a pain like this and what was it? i had the hep B series and my i don't drink and take an vicodin and motrin for bone pain.. occ tylenol at work for pain ( i work 12 hour shifts) .. what could this pain be?

Hi there.  I used to have pain in my lower rib cage that radiated to my back and it was a kidney stone.  The pain could be a dull ache and then turn into knock-me-to-the floor pain and nausea and vomiting.  Not sure if your symptoms are the same though.  I've had three or four over the years and the pain has now become instantly recognization as a kidney stone.  Hope you are feeling better and find an answer.

Consider the Common Bile Duct.  My Husband had his Gall Bladder out but still had significant pain.  Before the gall bladder was removed a HIDAA showed "low ejection factor."  And, in closing him up they did a test with dye that revealed a stricture on the common bile duct.  A Gastro cut it (laperscopically) and he's now pain-free.  This Gastro even said, "looks like we didn't need to take your gall bladder!"  (!)
