hard lump on head behind ear

by charist, Jun 04, 2007 12:00AM
I really hope someone responds.  I am SO FREAKED OUT. my 2 year old son has a hard lump on his head behind his left ear.  We did notice this weekend (before we noticed this lump) a HUGE raised , red,  insect bite on his scalp on the same side of his head as the lump- which definitely could have been infected. my husband insists this is a swollen gland due to the insect bite. he also has been fighting off a cold for over a week now.  but he it otherwise fine- normal energy, appetite, no fever and generally healthy seeming.  i tell myslef to be calm but i cannot deal with lumps -- i really need reassurance What do people think?  HELP!

Hi,

A lump behind the ear in children could be due to throat infection, insect bite, accidental trauma to the site, ear infection , etc.

Lymph nodes in the region are known as post auricular lymph nodes and can enlarge secondary to infection, inflammation, etc.

You could try some warm compresses at the site, warm saline gargles for his sore throat and some oral antihistamine medications for the swelling.

Does he have any other symptoms of fever, etc?

If the swelling still persists after a few days, it would be best to consult a doctor for a clinical examination and whether a course of antibiotics is required.

Let us know if you need any other information.

Regards.
