Syncope and nothing is wrong

by Bonniebell, Jun 18, 2007 12:00AM
August 2006:I  had a seizure.  I was unconscious for approximately 10 mins.  I felt odd before I passed out but not like, I was going to pass out. I have a history of fainting. I have fainted 16 times before and this was the first time that my body went stiff and my face contorted.   I had been diagnosed with vasovagal syncope. A neurologist sent me for an MRI, EEG, and an ANSAR (computerized autonomic nervous system evaluation). All came back normal except for the ANSAR. The ANSAR showed borderline autonomic neuropathy and an abnormal orthostatic reflex. When I was at the neurologist, my pulse was 62 and when I stood up my pulse was 96.  The neurologist felt that my symptoms were cardiac and sent me to my cardiologist, since I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolepse in 2000.  I went to the Cardiologist and he sent me for a Tilt table, stress test, and a special echocardiogram.  During the tilt table test, they gave me a medication to speed my heart up. My heart rate went up to 145 and my B.P. was 82/55, so they stopped the test and determined that it was negative.  The Echo was normal and I do not have Mitral Valve Prolapse.  The stress test was also normal. The neurologist says that it’s cardiac and the cardiologist says that it is neurological.  I am not diagnosed with orthostatic hypotension or vasovagal syncope. I have only been told to drink more water and eat a high sodium diet. I have no diagnosis and none of my dr’s will tell me what is going on.
January 2007:  I finally get a new dr.  She draws some blood because in the umpteen years of fainting NO ONE ever taken blood.  My fasting glucose test is 126.  More blood is taken  glucose tolerance  test is 97.  Again, fasting 120.  OK...Next another echo is done and I am dx'd with a condition called PDA...I go see the cardiologist, nope I have mitral vale stenosis and noting is wrong.  I am certified as healthy.  For years I have been passing out.  I go through periods where I feel very weak.  They are usually when I am have not been sleeping well, not eating well, a bit run down or sick.  I am always thristy and urinate a lot. I maintain a high sodium diet but with summer approaching I am getting nervous.  The heat seems to exacerbate my symptoms.   Every dr makes me feel like I am a hypochondriac.   I will become certifiably sick with anxiety since no one seems to be able to find out why I faint or have so called seizures.  I avoid dr's at all cost.  I can not keep going to new dr's hoping that one of them will finally tell me WHY?  or HOW?  I do not want something to be wrong, but I can feel that there is something not right.

Has anyone else experienced this?
(sorry that my pose is so long)

I've been to every type Dr. and hospitals all over the country including the Mayo clinic in Rochester MN and still NO diagnosis. Each Dr. comes up with something different (I think I've counted 9 different diagnosis so far.) This has been happening since April 2006 and I'm tired of hospitals, Doctors and test. I'm set for some test next month at Chapel Hill Hospital in NC but after that.....I'M DONE! I give up. Depression is definately going to be my next diagnosis. I'm not glad you're having the problem but I'm glad I'm not the only one and yours sounds EXACTLY like mine.
Bless you and good luck!

It seems that the neurologist used the ANSAR to confirm that you indeed have autonomic nervous system dysfuntion but did not use the test to treat the problem. The cardiologist vs neurologist problem exists because the problem lies in how the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves are controlling the heart. When you stand up, the nerves are supposed to tell the vessels in your legs to constrict and get the blood back up to the brain. This is not working correctly so your heart is trying to compensate for the lack of oxygen by beating too fast. I would reccomend that you find a doctor that will actually use the ANSAR test to prescribe some of the drugs that are known to help this problem. Maybe you can try to contact that company to find one. Good luck.
