Physical therapy, heating pads, hot baths, massage, ergonomic seating at home and at work, and mostly exercise wherever possible to build up the muscular system so it takes the pressure off the spinal system to do all the work of supporting the body.

Ask your doctor about NSAID, Lyrica (Pregabalin) and tramacet combo.
I am a nurse and the combo 3 seems to do wonders.
Good luck

Tramacet has done wonders for me, excellent relief for chronic back pain with minimal side-effects.
(Its a combination of Tramadol + Acetaminophen).

Agree with JayBay that weightlifting/exercise to strengthen 'every other body part' seems to help and especially buttocks.
*people laugh a bit at the buttocks thing but I swear that by exercising and developing strong buttocks I have made huge huge improvements on reducing lower back pain so I recommend it even if it sounds funny to people heh!

but Tramacet has been just amazing if we are talking just meds/pain reliever prescriptions.
