Overuse Prostatitis

by pridgew1, Mar 11, 2005 12:00AM
Hello

I’m 29 years of age and have has prostitius symptoms for some years. I have been checked periodically and there does not seem to be an infection. I have frequent sexual activity, which I believe is the cause of my symptoms that include:

Frequent urination (sometimes)

Takes a little while for my urine to flow sometimes stream is slow.

Pain and discomfort in abdominal area.

Extreme itching in rectum

My question is can excessive sex and masturbation cause prostatitus?

Is this something that can be cured through proper rest and normal sexual activity?

Am I at risk for infertility or impotence if I do not change my habits?

I have noticed when I take baths and lower my sexual activity things get a little better.

My grandfather died of prostate cancer when should I begin my checkups? I'm a little embarrassed to tell my doctor I have two much sex.

Being almost thirty I realize this behavior must stop or I'm in trouble if not already I want to have a normal sex life and health I body build and stay in shape but realize this is not enough.

What recommendations do you have in order for me to turn this around?

Hopefully

Thanks

To answer your questions:

1) I am not aware of excessive sex by itself leading to prostatitis.  Of course, if protection wasn't used or if high-risk sexual activity was practiced, that can change the risk of developing prostatitis.

2) Excessive sex should not lead to infertility.

3) The recommendations can vary and needs to be discussed with your personal physician.  One approach would be a digital rectal exam at age 40, as well as discussing whether a PSA would be helpful at age 50.

Regarding the frequent urination, you may want a blood test to check for diabetes or a urinalysis to determine whether there is excess sugar in the urine.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
