Quit marijuana use, loss of appetite?

by MichaelD, Nov 07, 2005 12:00AM
This is a serious question. I've been smoking marijuana regularly (around 3-4times a week) for around 6 months. After much thought, I've decided to quit and have stopped completely. I feel okay, and don't miss it at all. I'm posting because I just can't seem to eat. I've had this problem for about a month now (also around the same time I quit) and I'm wondering if it could be linked to the marijuana use? I feel hungry, but when I sit down and start eating I get nauseous and have to literally hold myself from vomiting. If you suspect that this is the cause, what can I do to start eating again?

Thanks for your time,

Michael

That's a serious problem ... so sorry to hear about this

The marijana that they use today is probably very much stronger than that of the 1960s ...

You have certainly made the right choice to stop smoking this ... as it would open the 'doorway' for stronger drugs & it probably has much more effect than anyone tells you

Could something else have started up at about the same time as you stopped smoking?  There is a chemical exposure that is common place.  It is in paint fumes and dry cleaning business and plastics business ... in all kinds of cleaning products ... and it can cause loss of taste and loss of small.

Don't know about loss of appetite.  But it can affect one's gastrointestinal system ... I suspect it for being the real cause of harm to the Vietnam vet ... also harming Korean vets, more than dioxin.  And it was an exposure to the gulf war vets.  www.valdezlink.com/same.htm  One gulf war vet shared with me that the vomiting occurs whenever he eats and he holds his stomach in pain.  I suspect this is an autoimmune metabolic causing chemical ... so could it be you have been exposed to this?  And if so, try to figure out where and stop the exposure.

Maybe you are looking in the right place to find help, though.  The only thing that seems to be showing promise for help are the nutritional guidelines started by Roger J. Williams, PhD and the glyconutrients that are being given in many trials for things that are autoimmune seem to be showing MUCH promise.

So go the good nutrition route (NO MORE chemicals of any kind) and you should get better.

All the best

I think your problem is from quiting marijuana. Marijuana causes an increase in appetite and suddenly quitting may cause lack of appetite. Also chronic smokers often have a lack of taste and most foods taste bland to them, but this should resolve it self after a while.

I doubt it is chemical realted and also the whole thing about marijuana being stronger now is nothing more then a myth (this is not to say that marijuana is safe beause it isn't)

It is great you kicked the habbit but maybe you should consult a doctor and maybe see a nutritionalist to set up diet plans untill your body returns to normal.

I like pot, but its soo freakin expensive.(like 12-20 dollars a bag!) It causes u to be hungry.

thats y i choose to dope up on Apetite supressing Stimulents.

if you ever take stimmulents do around 10-15 pills (for like ritilin) this is about the level where you hallucenate with hyperness. And its not enough to kill you.

yeah for stimmulents !

did you have a loss of appetite before you started smoking? i'm  just wondering if maybe you started smoking to get an appetite. congratulations on quitting, it's a good thing that you stopped after just 6 months, some of us smoked for years and years and that is hard to stop, but possible. i know, i did it. and my appetite went away for a while also. good luck to you.

I'm 17 and have been smoking marijuana for the past year and a half. I need it to eat. Without it i have no appetite and If I try to eat i will vomit. I normally weigh 118, but am now down to 104. Unfortunetly what i have been doing is just giving in and smoking so that I can get some sort of appetite or hopefully "the munchies". This is an endless cycle. I can't smoke weed forever, but I have to eat. what do I do? I'm really worried please help.

Yeah, weed is... I've smoked a disgusting amount, most likely more than any of you think possible. I still have the occasional toke. I'm used to rolling out of bed and puffing away. It got to the point where i needed to smoke to eat. I still almost do but i've stopped smoking pot as of late and my appetite did go. My number one recomendation for getting your activity is to take up physical activity. I have been doing so for some time. It was my increase in physical activity that promted me to cut my use back. The only recomendation that I have is for you to start jogging, swimming lifting weights, anything really. It will boost your metabolism and it will hurt to not eat if you've burned enough calories. Basically, when you were going to smoke pot go for a jog, it will make you feel better than a nice fat blunt.

Ive been a marijuana smoker for years. a few years back i had to quit...personally reasons.  the first month or two were horrible for me. i had trouble eating and sleeping.  i would be up til 5-6 am trying to go to sleep. marijuana has chemicals in it that alter other chemicals in your body. once your body is rid of the drug and toxin, it will return to normal. its a consquence of putting any substance in your body for a extended period of time.

Try Ginger tea before meals. Ginger is a natural anti-emitic and appetite enhancer. A cardiologist associate of mine uses it in clinical practice to reduce nausea in patients.

As TLD said physical activity is an appetite stimulant.

Also try drinking some water before eating to clean out your throat and swelling out your mouth with water before eating in case the flora in your mouth and throat are contibuting to your nausea.

I have been regularly smoking pot for about 4 years, pretty much every day with exceptions and have a few things I'd like to share. I notice my appetite is less when I do not smoke vs when I am high all day, but it's not like I don't get hungry, I just cant eat as much in one sitting. This is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact eating smaller portions more frequently throughout the day is much better for the body, because it  can digest a little at a time and keep the metabolism constantly active. I think the loss of appetite is due to the fact that if you are a regular smoker, you train your body to have the munchies which causes us to OVER-eat. So when you stop smoking your body's natural reaction is to eat less, at least in one sitting. Another factor to some of your problems may be your eating choices. Are you eating a healthy balanced diet? or are you eating fast food and lots of fatty foods and too much meat (most people dont realize we do not need anywhere close to the average amount of meat consumed to provide sufficient protein to the body). For people who really cant put anything in their mouth without gagging I would suggest trying to start with some liquids like juice, water, or a natural protein shake, and try to eat some fresh raw vegetables or fruit (bananas are great for digestion). That should be easy to take down. Also bland foods like white bread would be a good way to ease back into a normal diet. Definitely do not worry, as there is no way you permanently lost your appetite or "smoked yourself anorexic". Try to change your attitude, and your beliefs about your body and health to be more positive. Erase negative feelings and replace them with the opposite. Also as other people have suggested: EXERCISE. This is fundamental to a healthy lifestyle regardless of whether you smoke pot. It gives a natural high and increases the metabolism and appetite. If you are looking to put on some muscle mass, lifting weights will never fail to give you an appetite comparable to the worst munchies u ever had. On another note, it is my belief, that beliefs create reality. So if you think smoking pot will negatively affect your mind, body, and health those thoughts will most certainly give rise to that experience. So if smoking pot is negatively affecting you, either recognize the beliefs that gave rise to that state and replace them with the opposite, or quit smoking. I love pot and find that it enhances my creativity and my capacity to love and be empathetic and compassionate to all fellow humans that share this wonderful planet called earth. Everything is in your intentions. You all have been endowed with quite possibly the greatest gift of all: to create your own reality at every single moment, and together co-creating this entire universe. May you realize you are the limitless being. I wish all of you auspicious creating.
