Gallbladder disease is certainly high on the list and removing the gallbladder is a reasonable option.

You can also consider upper GI disease like GERD, an ulcer, or inflammation of the upper digestive tract.  An upper endoscopy can rule out these possibilities.

More specialized conditions like gastroparesis can be evaluated with a gastric emptying scan.  With the flushing symptoms, you can also consider carcinoid syndrome, which can be evaluated with a blood test looking for the metabolite 5-HIAA.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician or GI physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Hi there,CMorrill. I'm so sorry you're suffering so much. I am in a similar position...I'm 46, overweight at around 190lbs and have suddenly developed truly chronic pain under my right rib and below my shoulder blade at the back.

It's a horrible pain and is much worse at night, as I'm sure yours is; that is typical of gallstone pain - that it's worse at night. And the fact that you are finding fatty food - ANY food - makes the pain worse is typical also; every time you eat, your gall bladder squeezes to release bile into the digestive system and if it is full of gallstones and distended, well then it's gonna hurt! Because fatty foods need more bile to digest them, so more squeezing is involved = more pain
