What is microscopic colitis?

by ahem, Nov 15, 2006 12:00AM
What is microscopic colitis? What are its symptoms? How is it treated? Can it be confused with gluten intolerance? I spent over a month in the hospital, I've had many tests, and I still don't have a diagnosis.

Microscopic colitis comprises of collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis, both characterized by chronic watery diarrhea.

Gluten intolerance can also have this characteristic.

Symptomatic relief is the mainstay of treatment.  This can include avoidance of NSAIDs and increasing the amount of fiber in the diet.  If ineffective, medications like sulfasalazine or steroids can be considered.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
