Call allergic reaction look like herpes?

by jj in CA, Jul 28, 2007 05:01PM
Hi,

Anyone know if an allergic reaction (to latex, and related foods like mangos) can cause symptoms on the lips and genitalia that may resemble herpes outbreaks?  I've searched all over the web and I did see one picture of an allergic reaction on the lips that sort of look like what my lips looked like, but it was only one example.

The reason why I ask is that the doc on the STD forum says my case of simultaneous and recurrent oral and penile blister outbreaks are very atypical for herpes (as in he's never seen it), my limited sexual history is very unlikely to have exposed me to herpes in both locations, and I know I was exposed to high levels of latex powder the day before my 2nd outbreak (not too sure about if I had allergen exposure prior to my 1st outbreak).  I know I'm allergic to wasp stings and poison oak, if that helps.  Close family members have other allergies that cause skin reactions as well (although I don't think they present on the lips or genitals for them), so I have some family history of allergies.

A related question is, if in fact I am prone to allergic reactions to things like latex, do you always need to have direct contact with the skin area that has the breakout, or can the breakout also  happen on sensitive areas like the lips and genitals without direct contact?  I may have touched the breakout areas with latex powder on my hands but I'm not sure.

I am going to get a definitive blood test for herpes next time I see my doc, but I want to go in armed with as much information as possible in case it isn't herpes that's causing my symptoms.   Thanks for any input on my questions.

I too suffer from the same problem, but i didnt show signs of the reaction until two days AFTER i had SEXUAL INTERCOURSE.  This consisted of irritation on the vulva, a patch of fluid filled bumps underneath my left eyebrow (which went away the next morning), And swelling of my (FACE) lips(right where they meet together) I also experience chills which made goosebumps all over my body. And on my left bottom eyelid there were little pus spots that made a linear pattern along the eyelid. no bilsters, but i did have three bumps on my vaginal lips. Could this be herpes or an allergic reaction to latex. this confuses me b/c i've never had any bumps down there before also  i've never had an allergic reaction to any thing, that i know of
