Effects of calcium on mitral valve

by Bruce Macdonald, Aug 10, 1999 12:00AM
I've had a couple of incidents of atrial fibrillation which easily resolved with use of diltiazem within minutes (15 or 20).

I have Wegener's granulomatosis and have been in remission.  Currently, I'm taking only bacrim DS 2/day to prevent relapse.

I started taking 1200 mg/day of calcium when on prednisone, and have continued that after ceasing the prednisone about a year ago.

I have a very slight mitral valve prolapse.  Ejection fraction must be minimal if any at all, as my physical activities are not limited by shortness of breath.

Do I have reason to be concerned about the possiblity of calcium deposits on the mitral valve leading to damage?

Thanks for your attention.

Dear Bruce,

Assuming that your kidneys are working normally you should have no problem.  But with Wegeners you might have mild renal impairment.  Be careful to review this calcium with your physician.
