Treatment

I suffered some chest pain; a thallium stress test showed a blockage in my heart.  I am 70 years old and except for this problam, I have been and am in excellent health.  For the past three weeks I have been on medication (isosorbide and lipitor); I have had no chest pain.  I have consulted with two cardiologists; one prescribed the nedication and suggested that I try it for a few months; if I remained pain-free, that would be the path to follow.  The other cardiologist suggested that I have an angiogram; depending on what that showed, there would be three treatment options:  continuing on the medication, angioplasty or bypass surgery.  Both cardiologists felt that I have stable angina and that surgery would probably not be indicated.  What is your opinion?  If I were to consent to the angiogram, what are the risks involved?  Thank you.

Dear CEB,

I would recommend an angiogram to evaluate your coronary arteries.  It would be important to identify lesion that may become problematic in the future.

You are young by our standards and certainly would do well with angiography.  The risks invovled include local bleeding, and irregular heart rhythms.  You should discuss the specific risks with the physician performing the catheterization.
