Bastista Heart Reduction Surgery

by Linda Susan Aguilar, Aug 31, 1999 12:00AM
How many heart reductions have been preformed at the Cleveland Clinic and what have the mortality rates been. Is this a safe procedure for somebody with a leaking valve, blockage and scar tissue from a previous heart attack? And how many of your patients have been over the age of 65?

Dear Tony,

Thank you for your question.   The Batista procedure, named after the surgeon that first performed it, resects a part of the heart.  This surgery is for persons with very severe heart failure.  The idea of the procedure is to change the shape of the failing heart from a baggy ball to a more correct cone shape.  It was being performed here but has somewhat fallen out of favor due to high complication rates.  The current surgery that we are performing here is called the Dor procedure.  The difference is that only scar tissue is resected and it is less aggressive than the Batista.  The surgeon here doing them is Dr. McCarthy.  If you are interested in seeing if you are a candidate for the Dor procedure you can make an appointment with our heart failure clinic at 1-800-CCF-CARE.
