Severe Hypoxemia

by G. Jones, Sep 11, 1999 12:00AM
My question is more about lung dx associated with heart dx.  Did not see any other forum to answer my question specifically. I have recently been diagnosed with Severe Hypoxemia.  I would like to know the ediology,Prognosis. I was told that a (C-Pape) mechine would not help me. I have been placed on 2% oxygen at home 24hrs/day.

There are several causes of severe hypoxemia. A CPAP machine would be useful for sleep apnea. Home oxygen is most often used for people with severe emphysema or chronic obstructive lung disease (people that used to smoke heavily); it is a bad sign when their disease becomes this severe. It is important that a cause for your severe hypoxemia have been identified - that way anything that can be treated with specific medications or surgery can be. Home oxygen can be useful for symptoms, but rarely treats the underlying disease. Ask your doctor what the indication for home oxygen was.
