What is the risk of doing the surgery or leaving it alone?

by Stephen A, Oct 02, 1999 12:00AM
My son is 15 years old. He is in his second year of high school baseball where this year the physical reveled a heart murmer. The cardiologist said that his heart had a hole about one inch in size in one of the chambers.  He cleared him for sports this year stating that his heart is healthy and we should wait untill summer vacation to repair his heart. that way he won't miss any school or baseball and be healed and ready for the next year. I am sacred of the thought of open heart surgery.

It depends on exactly what type of hole it is and where it is located in the heart. Certain types of holes close up on their own, others do not. The ones that do not, especially when large, are generally closed surgically, or sometimes with devices implanted via catheters. Of course, there are immediate risks to surgery, but the risks of leaving the condition uncorrected are development of heart failure or arrhythmia in the future.
