RingWorm Treatment Follow Up

by krakatoa, Aug 04, 2006 12:00AM
At your advice (posted on 7/29) I went back to the dermatologist and they gave me Lamisil tablets 250mg for 30 days and Naftin gel for skin for treatment of ringworm. I started that on 7/31/06 (fith day today).

Backgrond: Originally I incorrectly treated ringworm (doctor thought it was eczema) with steroid creme for three months and now I have a large 3.5in diameter ringworm (dermatophytosis/tinea corpis) on my wrist (verifed by biopsy). Now after revisit to Dermatologist I am using only the Lamisil tablets and the Naftin.

I had some questions and unfortunately I cannot make it back to doctor until mid next week.

a)I am getting some side effects, I imagine from Lamisil.  Dissy/tired (I can live with it), very itchy all over. Today after fith day I feel some tightness of throat (not too bad I can breath).

Question: Can I take diphenhydramine HCL for itchy feeling (very bad)?

b)The Naftin gel prescription says one time a day. I have been using it 2-3 times a day. My skin is dry and the area of the ring itself is scally, white, flaky (not unlike a sunburn peel).

Question: Is this normal or am I using too much Naftin or is the Lamisil tablets working?

c) After 3-4 days on Lamisil I saw new bumps on my arm. I have about six additional bumps of ringworm the size of eraser heads or smaller. They have tended to stop growing once I hit them with the Naftin.

Question: Should I expect new ringworm after taking Lamisil tablets for 4 days?

d) When I work out in gym I use long sleeve tee shirt to avoid contaminating others and I clean equipment afterwards.

Question: To avoid sweat on ringworm can I use baby power (talc) on my forearm/wrist for the workout?

Up to today I see a little better color on the ringworm but the size is the same. Minor improvement. Some of the large ring has expanded a little to the right.

These are not typical side-effects from Lamisil.  I don't know what they mean.  Please call your doctor or go to a walk-in clinic or emergency room right away.

Don't know.  Keep using the Naftin.

Yes.

When my patients have questions and think they have side-effects, they call me.  I think you should do likewise with your doctor.

Best.

Hey,

I had simular issue. I had ringworm on my arm and Ketoconazole cream 2% cleared it up. You need to get a prescription for it.

I posted a few days ago and put my son on it and his face is clearing up. Finally!! After trying to treat it with everything else.

Good luck.
