'Waves' of pain in lower right abdomen

by missymarie30, Mar 09, 2006 12:00AM
As of yesterday I started to experience pains in my lower abdomen (right side).  It comes and goes and it can be described as a "dull" pain.

It doesn't hurt during sex, I don't bleed inbetween periods, and it's not tender when you press on my stomach.

I am really freaked out thinking it might be PID due to the serious consequences (infertility).  Does this sound like it could be PID??  Also-how long does untreated PID lead to infertility/damage to reproductive system?

Thank you!

Almost anything abnormal going on inside the lower abdomen causes more or less identical symptoms.  In other words, I cannot even begin to guess whether you might have PID, appendicitis, diverticulitis, an ovarian cyst, endometriosis, intestintal cramping, or any number of other things.  The chance it is PID would be higher if you have abnormal vaginal discharge or obvious sexual behavior risks (e.g., multiple partners, new partners).

So COULD it be PID?  Sure.  IS it PID?  I have no idea.  The ONLY way to know is to see a health care provider.  Don't delay; significant damange to the reproductive system can occur even before the pain of PID starts, so if that's what you have, every day of delay will only increase the risk.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
