MC question

Dr.

I had MC about 8 months ago(about 10-12 lesions) and had them  scraped off by my dermatologist.  I hadn't seen any new ones since but all of a sudden, I see one, maybe 2 new ones.  I would have thought I'd be clear by now.

Is it common to have a recurrence like this several months later?  Can you be reinfected or do you have immunity at some point?  I guess I'm just confused on why it came back after so long.

Thanks much!

There is very little research on molluscum contagiosum, especially in adults with genital infection.  So I really cannot tell you the frequency of recurrences after several months.  But it certainly happens, and does not suggest any sort of immune system abnormality.  The reason it happens sometimes simply isn't known.  Happily, it's not a dangerous condition in any way, and most likely, once the new lesions are removed, I doubt you'll have any problem in the fugure.  But discuss this with your dermatologist when you return to have them treated.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

Thanks you Dr.

Once the lesions are removed an healed, am I no longer contagious?  Just don't want to pass them on.  Do they spread via direct contact with the lesions?
