We both were tested for different STD's == is this possible ?

Recently I was tested for Chlamydia, through an STD clinic, and was treated accordingly with Doxyciline antibiotics. I have traced the Chlamydia to a partner about 4-5 months ago. my partner was tested after comming back from Holiday - she was tested "inconclusive" for Chlamydia but tested positive for Trichomanas. On return from my holiday, although no discharge, I still had a pain when passing urine. My partner was treated using the antibiotics "Metronidazole, 400mg", and I was further treated using both "Metrionidazole, 400mg and ceftriaxone 125mg". Since this I have returned to the STD clinic and my symptoms have dissapeared (although I have to wait until monday to confirm no stds). Originally, it was positively stated that I did not have Trichomnas (on my second visit)- but my girlfiend has had her tests confirmed as all clear (even though she had confirmed Trichomnas originally). Could it be possible that my original diagnosis did not pick up the Trichomnas given that I tested positive for Chlamydia ? It would help solve the mystery if it could.

Thanks

Most likely you did not actually have a positive test for trichomonas.  There is no reliable, commercially available test for trichomonas in men.  Once in a while, the organism can be seen when a sample of urethral discharge or urine is examined under the microscope, but in men that test misses over 90% of infections. Therefore, the vast majority of infections in men are simply assumed because a female partner has trich.

Your provider's "positive" assurance you didn't have trich was naive and irresponsible; or s/he was assuming that because you had been treated with metronidaolze; or you misunderstood.

Trich often goes together with other STDs, including chlamydia.  And almost all STD tests (chlamydia, gonorrhea, others) miss some infections.  You'll probably never "solve the mystery" about who was infected first and with which STDs (trich, chlamydia, perhaps others).   Just follow your providers' advice about treatment (which it seems you have done) and don't worry about it as long as your and your partners' sympoms clear up.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

the doctor is right, once you start playing the guessing game of who gave who what, you'll probably never find the answer. You will only drive yourself, and your partner mad!! Luckily these are not serious STD's, so treat them, and move on!!
