Is it herpes?

For a few months, I have had these small cuts on the one side of my vagina where it folds over. It always happens in the same spot every time and usually goes away in about a week. I figured it was just from rough sex or wiping too hard after going to the bathroom. The other day I was getting in the bath and once I hit the water I noticed that is stung more than usual. So I looked and there was 2 white heads inside the cut(first time thats ever occured) so i wiped them away and then it has been raw ever since. This time it is more painful than usual as well. It is not a blister but I have read that herpes can also be small cuts or fissures. Can you please tell me if this is herpes and if it isn't what it possibly could be??

It sounds like herpes is a possibility; that's the most common cause of genital sores that recur in more or less the same spot every time, and the h ealing time (a week or so) is about right.  However, you don't say anything about the timing.  If the problem is recurring every 1-6 months or something in that range, herpes is more likely.  If you're talking about something that comes and goes every couple of weeks, that's too frequent and herpes would be less likely.  If not herpes, I suppose the problem could be minor trauma, just as you have assumed; or perhaps a localized yeast infection.

Bottom line (no pun intended):  You should plan on seeing a health care provider promptly, i.e. within 1-2 days, the next time the sores appear.  Or just have a blood test for HSV-2.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
