Doc,

I've only been having sex with one woman over the last six months.  About three months ago I got what looked like a small rash on top of the head of my penis.  It was there for about a week then went away.  After I ejaculate the tip of my penis urethra) becomes very red and there is alittle clear dischage which doesn't seem to go away.  Now I have a dime size red rash on my scrotum which has been there for a few days.  I have a scheduled doctrs apointment next week.  what do you think I got.  The girl doesn't show any of these symptoms.

No STD can cause the redness of the penile opening that occurs only after sex; both that and the clear discharge after sex probably are just normal physiology.  It is common to have clear mucus for a while after sex, and redness that comes and goes like that (without soreness) doesn't sound abnormal.

The rash on  your penis and scrotum don't sound like STD either.  Herpes is always a possibility for unexplained genital skin lesions, but a dime-size patch that hasn't changed much over a week cannot be herpes. I'm less certain about the transient rash you had on the top of your penis.  If that rash had bumps or bllisters, or if it developed scabs as it went away, then herpes is a good bet.

Bottom line:  You're on the right track, i.e. see your doctor and follow his/her advice.  But most likely this isn't going to turn out to be an STD.  But if the penile rash behaved the way I describe above, talk to your doc about whether a blood test for herpes might be in order.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
