Hepatitis C Scare

I had at least partially unprotected sex two weeks before having an antibody screen for HIV, Hepatitis, Herpes...  Everything came back clean except they said that I should get further testing for hepatitis C, because they have a range of 1.0 to 8.0 in which they recommend further testing, but not to be too alarmed until that happens.  I came in at 1.14.  They also said there is a possibility that I have been exposed to hep c, but have not necessarily contracted a full infection.

As you can imagine, I am extremely worried, and I am also not in a situation to go to a physician, because I was laid off in June and no longer have medical insurance.  There was no blood involved, nor any anal, and it was not that time of the month for her.  I read that the RIBA test is more accurate.  What should I do?

Hepatitis C isn't at STD, and I don't have intimate familiarity with test results for it.  (We do not regularly do HCV testing in my STD clinic.)  My guess is that such a low value is not likely to indicate HCV infection.  The provider who did the test will know the answer, though; ask him or her.  If you have had only sexual risks, i.e. no potential exposure to blood (transfusions, injection drug use, etc), then you aren't at risk for HCV.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
