gonnorhea resistent to cipro?

Hello doctor I have a question, I am currently taking cipro 500 mg twice a day for 14 days, if I were to have contacted gonnorhea would this amount listed above get rid of the gonnorhea... even though in California cipro is prone not to cure gonnorhea at the 500 mg dose.  I think I might have gotten gonnorhea from a oral incident 4 days ago, no symtoms but I have already started taking the cipro I will have taken it  3 times by the end of this email. I know oral is low risk, oh I am a male by the way and I was the not giving head. LOL   Thanks for your time, I specifically want to know if the amount I will have taken in the 14 days would be enough.

Among gay men in California, in some cites (e.g., the Bay Area) up to 50% of gonorrhea strains may be resistant to the fluoroquinolone antibiotics.  There is a lot of geographic and population variability, and the rates aren't as high in other places and groups--but gay men in California lead the pack.  So you still need to be on the lookout for symptoms (urethral discharge, primarily) and get checked out promptly if that happens.

Hello Doc that really didn't answer my question.  I am a straight male and I received head from a female.  I am on cipro because of a prostate issue.  I just wanted to know that since cipro does cure gonnorhea would the two week dose I am taking do the job if I did catch it.  I have heard of the resistant strains in California.  I am in California and in the bay Area.  So what are my chance with a dose that high, if I happen to have it and it is a resistant type of gonnorhea?

Logically the risk is too low to worry about.  Chance your partner had gonorrhea of the throat, say 1 in 1000 (tops).  Chance you caught it if she had it, maybe as high as than 1 in 10.  Chance of cipro resistance, if you were exposed, probably around 10% (since it's a heterosexual situation--higher for gay men).  Chance of getting gonorrhea of the penis without symptoms, about 1%.  Thus, if you have no symptoms, your odds of having been infected come to 0.001 x 0.1 x 0.1 x 0.01 = 0.0000001.  That's one chance in 10 million--actually even less, since I used high estimates for the individual odds.  In other words, forget it.

Thanks doc for breaking that down for me.  But since I am on Cipro would I even develope sysmtoms?   I know from what you told me not to worry, and I am not truly worried just seeking infor.  Thanks again.

Hey Doc I think my above question is legit... How would I know if I had something being on Cipro?   I know risk was low but don't you think you could explain that to me.  I am by know mean paranoid, I would just like to be better informed.  Thanks

If infected by a strain resistant to the antibiotic you are taking, it is as if no antibiotic is present.  In other words, you would develop the same symptoms.  Urethral gonorrhea without recognized symptoms is rare.  If you haven't developed a urethral discharge (and often painful urination) within  a week of exposure, you can be confident you didn't catch gonorrhea.

Doc if you are around still, I have always wanted to ask, why oral is such a low risk for STD's. If you have the time to explain it to me.
