Measurement of LVH

How is the LVH measured, and how are they categorized? I mean,

how much of enlargement is called mild, moderate, servere etc?

LVH is measured on echocardiogram.  Some of it is a visual estimate but a rough guideline would be 1-1.1 cm mild; 1.1 to 1.3  moderate > 1.3 severe.

If a normal limits are .7--1.1cm why would 1.0 and 1.1cm be considered mild and moderate?Thank you.John

There is some overlap between mild and normal.

I was curious as to which portion of the LVH measurement you are writing about. Is the 1.3 cm. the posterior wall? I have a report on a teenager stating the posterior wall is enlarged at 1.3 cm., the interventricular septum is enlarged at 1.4 cm. Left ventricular diastole is 4.7 cm., left ventricular systolic is 3 cm. There is also tricuspid insufficiency and mild mitral valve prolapse. The diagnosis states concentric left ventricular hypertrophy (hypertension x1 year prior to echo).

Thanks for your comments.

Sorry,I forgot to add that the E-IVS (whatever that is) measured at 3 mm., normal stating greater than 6 mm.

Can you tell me the significance of all of this?

Thank you very much!
