Mix of medications causes legs swelling ?

by Charles McClelland, Jan 31, 2000 12:00AM
I am a 66 year old male diabetic taking GlucotrolXL 10mg 2x day, rezulin 400mg 1x day.  After 4 Bi-pass surgery in july 98 diagnosed with congenital heart failure also take furosemide 40mg. 2x day, coated asprine 81mg 1x day and vitamin supplments ocuvite 1 tablet, fish oil with omega 3- fatty acid 1000mg 1x day, garlic 1x day, vit.E 1000mg 1x day.  Went to hospital with flu symtoms (Vomitting, fever, swollen stomach, dehydrated, right lung full of fluid) Gave me Prinivil 20mg 1x day, magnesium chloride 64 mg. 2x day, potassium 99mg. 1x day. Did not take anything but what they prescribed while in hospital.  When I returned home and started takeing my other medication both legs swelled badly from knee down and are still swollen.

Could added combination of medication from hospital cause legs to swell so much?  Which medication may be the culpret?

The leg swelling could be from worsening of your heart failure or could be caused by the Prinivil.  You should have these symptoms evaluated as well as have your medicatons reviewed and lab work to check the function of your kidney done.

Best of luck.

Mr. McClelland;  I will turn 60 on the 8th of February.  In 1995 I had 5 Bi-Passes and a reaming of the left Carotid artery. It was after that surgery that I experinced the same swelling in my ankles all the way up into the thigh. This went on for about a year and then they discovered an aortic aneurysm that was in need of repair. This plus a graft in my femoral artery.  Three months went by and the graft became infected. The surgery was redone. Several months after that the graft slipped and punctured my bladder. The bladder needed to be repaired and the graft surgery was done over as they had to move it. Now,I complained to 1/2 dozen physicians about the swelling and no one gave me a satisfactory answer as how to resolve this situation. The swelling was so intense around the knee area that I could just barely lift my right leg to step into the shower. My prescribed med was what you are taking. (that would be two 40mgs Lasek per day.)  Last spring my cardiologost was ill and I saw one of his associates. He did resolve the swelling. He put me on 5 - 40mgs of Lasek daily with 2 other diuretics. Being a type 2 diabetic all of these meds affected my Creatinine levels severly. I went back to two Lasek daily and the swelling remains moderate now contained generally to feet , ankles and slightly in the right thigh. If this is heart related I often wonder as to why the problem is only in one leg ???  If you have any updated information on this swelling problem please, drop me a line.
