after ablation

by stevebu, Jul 25, 2000 12:00AM
Hi.  I am a 33 year olf male.  After having SVT for many many years and taking calan 240SR, I was having as many episodes of fast heart rate while on meds as I use to when I didn't take meds.  I had the stress test, EKG, and echo which were all normal. I was sent to an EP doctor and put on King of Hearts monitor for one month.  Of course the SVT never happened during that month, but I did have a couple very brief atrial fib episodes, and even one 5 beat V tach episode.  My doctor told me not to worry about it and the V tach hasn't happened again.

1) Could the atrial fib and V tach have been a result of my hearts adjustment to the loss of meds?

I had RF ablation completed 06/28.  It was a piece of cake.  They found the trouble spot and burned it.  They could not reproduce the SVT after the ablation.

2) Would they have tested for other serious electrical disturbances, or only the SVT?  That V tach episode still worries me.

3) Finally, I have noticed one or two brief atrial fib episodes every day for the last 2 or 3 weeks.  Only a few seconds.  Could this be a temporary result of my RF ablation?  I am a runner 30 miles per week, should I have waited longer than a week to get back into running?

Thank you for reading this.

Dear Steve,

1) Could the atrial fib and V tach have been a result of my hearts adjustment to the loss of meds?

A: Not typically. If the king of hearts was before the ablation your doctor may want to repeat it to clarify if the episodes were actually afib/VT or if they were just the SVT.

2) Would they have tested for other serious electrical disturbances, or only the SVT? That V tach episode still

worries me.

A: Yes they would also have tested for VT.  Most likely this is a red herring.

3) Finally, I have noticed one or two brief atrial fib episodes every day for the last 2 or 3 weeks. Only a few seconds. Could this be a temporary result of my RF ablation? I am a runner 30 miles per week, should I have waited longer than a week to get back into running?

A: I don't think the running would have anything to do with it.  I would again suggest a repeat king of hearts (event recorder) test to confirm what type of rhythm you are having.  If this fails to capture the arrhythmia there are longer term devices that can be used.  If you are having episodes of afib you may need to go back on medications.
