Side Effects of Drugs Used

by DLP, Jul 03, 2001 12:00AM
I have been diagnosed as having hereditary High Blood Pressure & Cholesterol.

I have been prescribed Bendrofluizide and Enalapril Maleate for the blood pressure with Simvastatin for the cholesterol.

I have been taking these drugs for 3 months.

I am now finding that my hair is falling out as a side effect of the Simvastatin, which is quite distressing for a woman.

My doctor has suggested that I still carry on taking this drug as it has significantly reduced my cholesterol.

Can you please advise me if there is anything I can massage into my scalp or take oraly to stop any further hair loss.

The other alternative is to stop taking the drug altogether and risk heart disease in the future, which I obviously do not want.

Thank you for your help in this matter

Dear DLP,

How do you know it is due to the simvastatin?  This is not a typical side-effect. If your doctor is sure that this is the cause there are several possible solutions.  There are medications such as monoxidil that can help promote hair growth and you can talk to your doctor about this.  Another possibility is changing to a different type of cholesterol lowering drug such as Niacin or Lopid. Diet and exercise should also help in lowering your cholesterol and decreasing your risk of heart disease.
