Change from Arrythmia to low heart rate

by Hodg, Dec 17, 2001 12:00AM
I have been treated for about 8 years to reduce effects of fibrilation (coumadin 5mg and digoxin 2mg).

Since moving to Thailand (December 2000)I went from 95 to 83kg (recently to 86kg).

After a superficial injury causing blackout (February 2001) I was thoroughly tested & condition and medication confirmed and monitored every 3 months.

About 10 days ago (& continuing), my pulse has dropped to 32-36/minute (very even heart beat)& Arrythmia/fibrilation has totally disappeared.

I feel quite weak, near blackout condition (almost constant)& sometimes nauseous (especially walking up and down 40 steps).

Local doctors baffled. What's the likely cause & is it a concern (other than physical safety)?

Dear Hodg,

Individuals with atrial fibrillation often have what is called "sinus node dysfunction" or "tachycardia-bradycardia syndrome".  What this means is that the heart's own pacemaker is not working properly and there are periods of very fast heartrate (such as afib) followed by periods of very slow heart rate (e.g. 30's-40's bpm).  The treatment of choice for this is a pacemaker and medications to control the fast heart rate.  If there is not a doctor there who does this I would look into traveling to Singapore or the US.
