ARVD - Diagnostics Test

What are the best diagnostic tests to rule out ARVD? Is it true that ARVD is found particularly in the Italian and Nova Scotia population? What are the signs and symptoms of ARVD?

Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia (ARVD) is a disease which results in a fatty infiltration of heart muscle in the right ventricle. This results in weakening of the heart muscle. It has been found to be much more prevalent in the Southern Italian population.



The combination of echocardiography and cardiac scintigraphy can identify almost all patients with ARVD. Other tests such as MRI and CT scans are useful but have not been as well studied as the previously mentioned tests. The average age of presentation is approximately 31 years. Most patients present with symptomatic rhythm disturbances especially nonsustained ventricular tachycardia. The symptoms consist of palpitations, dizziness, blackouts and shortness of breath.
